I don't have a yard but enjoy fresh vegetables, so I started growing tomatoes indoors. The problem is when I travel, the pots dry out. I recently found some Lechuza (spelling?) self-watering planters that work great. I had to regulate the amount of water, but once I got that figured out, my plants are doing better than if I was there to water them.
