The Tontitown grape festival will have its 111th grape festival Tuesday August 5th thru August 9th, 2009. Tontitown is in the western Arkansas river Valley.
It was started in 1899 by Italian settlers who had settled there earlier after a failed settlement in Southern Arkansas. They had brought grape cuttings from Italy. They did not do well in southern Ark but did well in the cooler climate of the river valley.
The festival was started by the St Marys Cathlic Church to celebrate a good harvest and has continued every year.
The days from Tuesday thru Saturday will have a carnival. Starting Thursday will be homemade speggetti dinners as only the italians can make. Also a used book sale on each day and arts and crafts.
There are also grapes for sale and there are several winerys in the area.
I injoy eating the tart wine grapes.

Do you happen to have anything that indicates the dates of the first festival?

Hmmm...can we find the dates of the 100th anniversary? (We have to have an actual date in order to include it in the History.)
