My gladiolus just got through blooming (right while I was sick so I didn't even get to enjoy them :( ) and I was thinking of cutting them off and planting something else in the now bare space. What can I plant this late?
I think you are supposed to leave the leaves until they die on there own. Your best bet would be to go to Lowes, HD or a local nursery and see what they have left.
The annuals I would suggest just aren't worth the money and trouble for the length of time you have left. If your first actual freeze is late Sept., many annuals will go into decline when the temps begin to drop into the 40's or even the lower 50's on a regular basis.
On the other hand, it's too early and hot for winter annuals such as pansies, dianthus and snapdragons. Those usually go in about the time of the first freeze.
