Hoping there will be some scientists on here who can help me out.
After I read this article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/14/garden/14lead.html

I decided to have my soil tested, and it came back with lead levels of 1019ppm and a ph of 6.5.

I have read elsewhere that with lead levels of 400ppm to 1200 it is OK to grow fruits like tomatoes,
but is not OK to grow leafy greens or root vegetables.

All my tomatoes and peppers are in the ground. The article says tomatoes do not readily accumulate lead, but what does that mean? I'm wondering if they're OK for me to eat.

Does anyone know how I can add lime to the soil to increase the pH after I already have the plants in the ground?

Has anyone else here who is growing in the ground had their soil tested? Apparently if your soil had an old house on it or is near a well-traveled road, it most likely has pretty high lead levels...
