I have a patch of irises that bloomed nicely in May and now the vegetation is dying back (as expected). My question is, at what point can I trim the dying leaves to the ground? Right now they're about half green, half brown. I know they shouldn't be trimmed immediately, so the leaves can photosynthesize and store food in their root (bulb? corm?), but at what point is trimming OK?
I do have some zinnias growing in front of them, but they look kind of scraggly.
Thanks! :)
