My first year also and as they started to ripen I put old tomato cages around each plant and draped bird netting over them and clipped closed with cloth pins. Hard to find the opening. Your idea will be installed next year for sure.

Thanks for commenting. The tomato cage sounds like a good idea. I think you'll like this, especially as the bushes grow and tomato cages may be a bit small. Good luck!
