Last spring, I planted a new shade border with dicentra, hostas, ajuga, and astilbes- I planted two fanals (I'm pretty sure anyway) and the other is a different type but I cannot remember which. One of the fanals looked great through the summer, one did not. It almost immediately looked bad- half of the leaves turned brown and dried/curled up. I was surprised it even came back this spring. All three astilbes looked great until about a month ago when the two fanals started looking horrible again. The unidentified astilbe just finished blooming and appears to be healthy, while the two fanals look incredibly sick. They are in partial shade- with a few hours of early morning sun/heavy afternoon shade, the pH of the soil is just under 7, they are watered regularly, fed regularly throughout the growing season, I just cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong. I researched this last summer as well and wonder if I should just give up and either move them or throw them away. The following photo is of one of the fanals and I will also upload a photo of the healthy one near it.
