my next question is, what do you all use to stake your dahlias? Last year, I made use of some old tobacco stakes that were left in the garage from a previous tenant. This year I went back to Lowes to get some thicker bamboo stakes, but they were sold out, so I got some smaller ones. Obviously, I need something heavier.
They also sell a green plastic coated metal rod, but they aren't that long. By the time I hammer the stake in the ground, I need more than 4' above in order to hold the heavy blooms. They look nice and straight this year, but last nite's rain storm bent some of them over. Do I need to cut special stakes? Or should I be pinching them to keep them shorter? (I remember seeing that in a discussion somewhere)
Would appreciate some tried and true advice!
Kathy
