I have waaay too many plants, leaves of everything. Would like to sell on DG Markeplace to benefit both subscribers and me at unusually low prices. But...I don't have any desire to be selling to the public everywhere at these prices.

Last time I had 'normal' prices and most sells were sold to people who don't even belong to DG. That didn't both me because they were just 'normal' prices.

Thanks

Perhaps those who haven't subscribed haven't done so for some fiscal reason and would benefit from these 'unusually low prices' more than those who have the means for such a subscription. Also, how do you qualify someone as "belonging" to DG? I don't agree with your reasoning.

gessiegail,I think all of us sellers have "way" too many plants this year.We can thank the economy for that.Mark them down and let them go where they will. That is what I have done and they are still not moving very fast. There comes a price point where it isn't profitable to pack and ship.I see a lot of good plants going into the compost this October.I realize some will say "why not let them go for postage".Labor, whether ours or hired, just costs too much for that.

I would love to have sold all those streptocarpus for 3.00 each. That is unheard of anywhere. But...they didn't even sell. (I sold a few and gave away a lot of extras to those that did buy a couple or three) The only money I made (I love to grow but it costs a lot to grow good plants) was from a nice man who belongs to both DG and he is a big ebay vendor. I am glad he got what he wanted, but last year ebay vendors loved to shop at bargain prices on DG and then sell them on ebay. That is why I asked the question.

Even though I don't like selling on ebay, I am doing it right now only trying to recoup a small part (financially) of what I have grown this year.

Grantman, if you only knew how much money it costs to keep this many plants growing and healthy, you would know that I am losing money by selling at the prices I did for DGers. I did it because I love my fellow DGers. If members can't come up with 19.95 for a full year of fun, learning and sheer pleasure, I can't imagine them buying any plants at bargain prices anyway.

I was only not wanting ebay vendors to snatch them up (they didn't anyway)...

I haven't subscribed simply because I haven't found a need to. I dwell in the beginner forums and get all of my questions answered. I visit 2 out of the countless forums on this site. Perhaps in time if I need more assistance or wish to share my landscape/garden through blogs and images, I would consider subscribing. I understand that our subscriptions are what keep this website going, but I've yet to justify the cost.
Also, I would buy bargain-priced plants without paying for a subscription. It's either buy it from you, or buy it from a local nursery or Home Depot. Wouldn't you prefer someone buying from you, even if they're not subscribers?

gessie, as far as growing all those plants, don't do it if you don't want to. just because you like to propagate doesn't mean that buyers will materialize or that DG has to mold itself around you.

Laughing as I am drinking my first cup of coffee this morning as I read your retort, summerkid. Gee, people have said a lot of unkind words about me in my life but narcissistic is not one of the words used. (smiling)

Gessie, it wasn't a retort; I just never understand your complaints. If you are propagating & sharing for the love of other DGers, then just give away or trade your plants. If you are hoping to make money, then you have to be savvy enough to work with the business models that different venues present.

Do you honestly think that the other Marketplace sellers would like to see their potential customer base SHRINK?

I have never tried to 'make money' with my passion of propagating...just trying to cover a hint of my cost. I don't know about you trading but boxes leave my house (for free) every week to share with DGers. As far as being savvy, no I am not. It doesn't embarrass me in the least that I am not computer saavy or business saavy. I joined DG to make life long friends, which I have and to share my love of plants. I currently am sending out a 12x12x8 box full of every plant I can fit in and FOR FREE...FOR THE LOVE OF SHARING.

I , too, want to thank you for policing who has the right to complain and who doesn't. DG needs more police women like you...kinda like they need a hole in the head.

People like you always make my day along with finding out today that I need knee surgery and cancer surgery on my face. Thanks so much for being such a kind DGer. YOu just lift the spirits of everyone you come across.

PS I will never answer your posts if you will promise never to answer my post anymore...Deal?

I am not policing anyone, Gessie, just trying to participate in a public forum. Responding to your complaints is not saying that you don't have the RIGHT to complain. I hope everything goes well with your surgeries.

It looks like this is a thread destined for the "deleted" folder. I'm locking it down to new replies before I do; I trust we won't find this same dispute rearing its ugly head in any other threads...
