| Though I used to do this at a pizza restaurant long ago, today I played
around and made some record bowls. People have been doing this for
a long time, it's nothing new.
All you need is an oven, an old vinyl record (33 rpms make great bowls)
and a few bowls of various sizes in stainless steel, ovenproof, etc.
I used a large stainless steel bowl, placing a metal lid from a jelly jar in the
bottom of the bowl so the vinyl bowl would come out with a flat bottom instead
of rounded like the bowl I was using.
Then I placed a 33 rpm record on top of the big bowl. The group was put onto
a foil-covered pizza sheet and cooked for two minutes in a 300° oven.
The temperature doesn't have to be that high, but it is what I like to use.
After this was removed from the oven, I immediately placed a smaller sized
bowl on top and pushed in the center with a pot holder. You can either run this
under cold water to instantly harden the dish, or allow it to cool.
Don't forget to turn the oven off.
This is not the most exciting craft for some, but hey, I had fun and wanted to
share it. It is a great idea for kids' rooms to organize things, they make great
animal food bowls, small pots for gardening (complete with drain hole already)
and more.
Yard sales and Salvation Army stores often sell stacks of these old records
for nothing. Don't forget to use an old record that isn't worth anything.
Experiment with different bowls and shapes. You can even cut the records
with scissors if you do it as soon as the record comes out of the oven.
Have fun, and be careful!

| How cool! I've never seen those before. Boy, there's all kinds of stuff you could do with them. How about making your own pinwheels? Guess I'll be hitting the record bin at the thrift store. Thanks, Wuvie! :) |

| Forgot to mention, you can also just heat them flat on a pizza pan for a few
minutes, then when they come out, drape them over something very quickly
and hold it down with gloved hands. Same result.

| About how long do they remain at least somewhat pliable? I'd love to make pinwheels by heating them on a pizza pan, then cutting and bending them into shape- I just wonder if I would have time to get all the way around before they stiffen up too much. |

| Pony,
What you could do is take it out of the oven and make the cuts quickly.
Then put it back into the oven for two more minutes. You should then
have time to pull the points back for your pinwheels, fun idea!

| is there a odor when you heat them up? Seems like I remember a strong smell when my troop (girl scouts) when we did the old CD's |

| Hmm. Well, I didn't notice any smell other than the pizza crumbs my
son left in the oven, LOL.
Perhaps it is the change in vinyl over the years. I noticed the oldest
records were thicker, which required longer time in the oven. But
I did not notice anything one might consider toxic or harmful.

| Thats great but maybe just maybe to be on the safe side I will use the BBQ outside.. lol.. Have birds in the house and just can't take a chance.. Shoot we don't have non stick pots and pans in the house, because of the chance of fumes..
I think the BBQ grill will work.. Just let the stone heat up (slow as not to crack it) then lay the records on top of it.. Hmm now I gotta think of what to do with them once made.. lol..
Once again Wuvie thanks for keeping my mind and hands busy.. :-) |

| I think I'll use hubby's garage oven when I try it, just to be safe. With the fan on and the doors open, the ventilation in there is excellent.
I think I'll try Dirt_Road's idea too- CD pinwheels would be nifty! :) |

| Yea I think I will will stick to outside.. After doing a search I found a comment about heating up the LP.. I will have to find that link again if I can.. lol.. So much rain here today, all I have done is sit at the computer and click links.. lol..
Check out this artist.. Now this I totally love. Wonder how he does it? http://old.aeroplastics.net/Carlos_Aires/LOVE_vinyl_CA.html Hmmm and this girl.. check her out.. Maybe this is how the above artist does it... but maybe with a stamp cutter thingy? lol.. http://www.youtube.com/user/SHOPCROPSUEY#play/uploads/16/KXN... and another of her videos http://www.youtube.com/user/SHOPCROPSUEY#play/uploads/17/bw0...
Also found a water fountain made out of melted LP's on youtube.. Going with their idea I would change it up a bit so that the water pours over into the larger section.. I think it would be so cool pouring over all the little dips and waves.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lM5aEUVyBNA
Oh my daughter would love this!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxAwGMd37Y8
~~~~~~~
I think I found the site, Now this may or may not have anything to do with the craft of melting LP's .. Also have to worry about leaching out so NEVER use with Food.. As I believe Wuvie mentioned before.. BUT this was the only site I ran across that mentioned anything.. But found TONS of people who melt LP's... lol.. So I guess the concern is small.?.
| Hahaha! A fountain was the first thing I thought of when I saw Wuvie's bowl. But I really need to stop making tabletop fountains, I'm out of places to put them!
But then again, I could make a multi-tiered one for outside... Hmmm... |
| Yep Pony, thats what I was thinking.. Multi-tiered and outside.. and since it really is PVC I wonder how long it would do out in the elements? |
| I'd put it on my covered porch- definitely wouldn't want it out in the hot sun. I can just picture the whole fountain melting into a slag heap... LOL |
