I use a Dremel with a diamond grinding cone tip to make holes in ceramic and pottery items, it's easy and there's much less risk of shattering. You can make small or large holes as you see fit. It's a great alternative to using a drill, and Dremels aren't that expensive for the basic kit. I sure get my money's worth out of mine. :)
