SOLVED: Purple leaf, licorice smell

Croton-on-Hudson, NY(Zone 6b)

A neighbor gave this to me but she does not know what it is. It has a licorice smell and she says it can be used in salads and but it is invasive. Before I plant it ( or eat it ) I want to know what it is. Any help will be appreciated.

It is called Perilla;

"Invasive" is putting it mildly.

frostweed - This does look something like the purple plant "Red shiso - Perilla frutescens" in your link. It also looks very much like the Perilla 'Gage's Shadow' in DG at http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/135939/ . However, the DG listing says that "All parts of plant are poisonous if ingested," so it must be the Perilla frutescens. I'll keep this open a day or so just for confirmation.

That looks very much like Purple Basil. It has an anise scent to it also.

Show the plant when it flowers.
