My method to rid the yard of moles can be 100% effective with a little practice. I walk on the tunnels smashing them back down to ground level or lower. Then it is simply checking the area about every hour or so, watching for movement in the smashed down tunnels. The moles seem to use the same feeder tunnels consistently and it won't be long before you will see them lifting the sod again. Walk softly to the movement with a spade point shovel in hand. Timing is everything. When you see movement of the sod, quickly push the shovel into the ground behind the mole with your foot (you can usually observe which direction the mole is digging) about 6"-8" inches and flip the shovel-full of dirt out of the ground. More times than not, the mole is in the shovel-full of dirt and usually "beside" it's self, if you know what I mean. Dispose of the mole and lower the dirt and sod back to the hole making a neat patch. If you don't find the mole in the shovel full of dirt or at the bottom of the hole, smash down the tunnels again, it will be back. They seem to be creatures of habit and will return to the same run or another close by time after time.
I have decreased the neighborhood population of moles by around a dozen or so in the last 2 summers. They seem to be the most active of a morning or late afternoon, which I presume is when the area may be the quietest. If the yard is very dry to due lack of rain, after a good soaking by a rain shower or the garden hose check the tunnel areas hourly again as they don't seem to like dry soil and their food usually has moved deeper to moist soil.
This method may seem to be a little drastic and can be somewhat time consuming, but very effective with a little practice! If at first you don't succeed, try again. Be persistent and this method can be 100% effective.
