Well, here is the 1st glimpse at my triangle blocks.
I've been collecting the fabrics for 3+ years and started the cutting on 30 Dec 2008. My goal was to have all the blocks done by summer 2009. Yesterday I finished the last 30 blocks.

So far there are 222 blocks. Each has 13 pieces - 12 of which are triangles. That is a total of 2886 pieces. And I avoid triangles whenever possible!!!!

No 2 blocks are the same and I believe there are @60 fabrics.

The original pattern called for 232 - 5" blocks to make a king size quilt. I decided to make my blocks bigger - mine are 6". I was aiming for 8" blocks but messed up the math somewhere along the way.
Hopefully 222 will be enough.

Then, to do the setting, 2 more triangles are added to most of the blocks. That is what will give them the offset. So I will need @200 setting triangles.

Here is a pile of not yet places pieces.

My goal is to have all the pieces together by the time winter rolls around.

The fabric it is lying on will be the setting/background fabric. I have a couple pieces that I'm considering for the border. Will have to see which I prefer once it is all together.

Thunder, I believe I have sent you scraps from all of these fabrics.

O wow. I will never get to that project...well who knows. I have always loved those granny square crocheted afgans with the black and each block differt color schemes. I wondered it I could ever make a quiilt like that. The answer is clearly...yes

Actually, it wasn't all that bad. I did cut the 2nd round of triangles the wrong size for probably 20 blocks. Luckily I didn't cut them all!!!!
Now to pick all the blocks up and figure out the correct size to cut those setting triangles, then start cutting again!!!

Lord bless you for your patience and perseverance!!!!! That is an amazing job Jean. Does this quilt have a special place it is going? How did you purchase your fabrics? As fat quarters, left-overs or what? I'm in awe...

Very few Qtrs. Lots of 1/2 yd cuts. Some left overs from other projects. There are no more than 4 centers from any 1 fabric. There is 1 fabric that is only in 1 block. So far I have only found 2 blocks that are a mirror image of each other - same 2 fabrics just in the different locations.

The centers took the longest to do. The 2 outer layers weren't bad at all.

This will be the quilt for our king bed. The goal is to have it done & on the bed before Christmas.

Wow Jean just beautiful. I have a similar project I am doing for my daughter it is a ducthmans puzzle style so I can relate to the triangle thing mine has 380 something flying geese sets. I started it last year and have been on a stand still. I really should give myself a goal like you have. I also plan on doing a Dear Jane starting in Jan. 2010 but that is going to be a sew along so you have to work on it. Good luck with your beautiful quilt very pretty. Cher

gardenglory- here is a link that has a little history on the quilt and a pic. It has many little blocks, and if I remember correctly, no two are alike (?). Many of the online quilt groups are doing this quilt, similar to a block of the month, seems very popular. I would love to start one, but being new to quilting, I have enough 'want to's' at this point.
I'm sure someone else will jump in here with more info for you. Or you can do a search online in the meantime.

I'd never heard of "Dear Jane" either. I do have a picture of a similar quilt that I picked up somewhere. All the blocks finished 4". None of that for me.
At least with these triangle blocks there really isn't any matching to do. I could not imagine matching corners on tiny blocks.

That is right the blocks all finish at 4" there are 225 of them all different. Some are really easy some are pretty difficult. Then the triangles in the borders are all different too. The techniques vary from paper piecing , applique to traditional. They are guessing 14 months for us to finish but that is the goal to finish it. I think it will be a lot of fun. That is the original website that shows Jane Stickles quilt and her story.

This has got me digging thru my books and stuff I have cut out to save. I want to start something like this, something I can do when I have just a little time here and there...or I dont want to think to much, but I want to sew. In other words, mine is going to be a little easier, but I would like to make it an ongoing project for awhile, something when I look at it I have stores behind lots and lots of the fabric.

I got the Fons & Porter triangle point trimmer & it made a big difference. And I cut the triangles a tad bigger than I really needed them. It all worked out in the end.

I'm anxious to start cutting the 400 setting triangles but will wait till I finish quilting the 2 quilts I have in the wings.

Thunder - Thanks for the "WOW!!!! Of course I'm already thinking about what I can do with the back. I have a tropical batik but think I'm going to somehow incorporate the fabrics from the front.

Yes, this was the Thangles BoM from the store that closed. Since I had all the patterns, I decided to get the blocks finished.

Those setting blocks were just 1 large plain square in the pattern. What I did for the centers was use the "waste" (like I would ever throw that much fabric away) from making the "borders" around those center blocks. Put 4 of the pieced squares together to make them. Have hundreds of them left. Figure I'll somehow "float" them in the border.

Is this like paper piecing or is this a different method?

Thangles are basically paper piecing for each triangle square. Cut them apart and you have a punch of 1/2 square triangles all the same size. THey are great for small pieces. Over 3" I see no advantage to using them.

I've gotten back to work on the Thangles project (pics in the middle). Decided since I had extra fabric I'd make more bocks and make it King size. So, all the strips are sewn togehter and 1/2 the strips are joined. Had to take a break from the machine. Since it is set on "point" had to put finisheing triangles at the ends of each row. So far they all seem to be matcing up.

Brought what I had done up to show DH and he thinks it will look great in the master bedroom.

I think I have a bolt of fabric that will work as the border.

I'll make sure I get some pics when it's all put together.

Jean you make me want to take a class in Thangles; right after the classs in paper pieceing! I love all the stars and want a quilt with stars for my bed. Maybe that is what I can use the black and whites for.

You all and your triangles! While I have been sewing for years I feel like a novice with you all. I would never attempt a quilt that detailed and so much work. I get bored easily and I know I just wouldn't finish it. I need things where I can get a quick fix.

I sat down to cut the @500 setting triangles this AM. Decided to recalculate the needed yardage 1st. Good thing I did. From the fabric I had planned to use (it was not originally purchased for this project), I would only have gotten about 3/4 of the pieces. Then I would have gone screaming into the night never to be heard from again.

Was going to do some quilting. Got the quilt loaded, turned around, and there was Shaleigh kitty enjoying the fabric hammock. So loosened the tension and carried her upstairs.

By then it was time to get ready to head out so the quilting will have to wait sill she is napping elsewhere and I can't cut the pieces till I get new fabric!!!!!!

Those squares would be a great "break in" to paper piecing. SInce there are no "triangle" pieces, there is no "thinking" about which way the fabric will go after it is sewed on.

Log cabin can also be done with paper piecing.
