THAT THING was under a bale of straw in my driveway this spring! Its head was fanned & it had a very very long thin string-like sticky slimy body. I put it in the sun in the driveway - hoping it would cook b/c it just seemed so... wrong. Aha, my instincts were right! Bet some nice salt would melt them up too. It was going no where fast so next encounter I think I'll dash for the kosher salt box. Thanks for letting us know about this enemy to my beloved earthworms!

They are disgusting, aren't they? Orange oil will also do the trick in killing them.

Oh, wow...I am SOOO glad to know what these things are and what to do about them! I've been seeing them off and on since we moved to Denton, TX, 8 years ago. Saw one last week slithering across our patio and stared at it, wondering again what to do about it, if anything, because, as "stormygace" said, it just looked so wrong. We keep orange oil on hand and now that I know it definitely is not a gardeners friend, I will gladly zap the hammer heads from now on every time I see them. You have made my day, Texas Tam! Thanks a million.
By the way, do you know if they can do any harm to goldfish or koi? The very first time I saw some of them was around our fish pond.
