Saturday morning I went out to my garden and everything looked so beautiful until out of the corner of my eye, I saw a pile of green stuff lying near the end of the border. On closer inspection it turned out to be my lovely little eupatoria that I had been congratulating myself over only the day before. It came in a 4" pot in a nicely packed box with a dozen other plants in June. I noticed that it had a Y junction at about 4-5" and looked a little top heavy with its three or four leaves on each limb, but I planted it out by the deck stairs, so it could use them as a wind break. Within two months it had grown from an insignificant stick to a beautiful little shrub, full of pink flowers the bees flock to. Sadly, it now looked like a child had fallen into the middle of it, but there are no children around, and the plant is (was) protected from deer. After I stopped saying bad words I looked to see if I might be able to prop it up or mend it with duck tape, as I have been able to do with some brittle sage limbs. Impossible, it had split down the middle. So I dismantled it and brought it into the house. Now that I've dried my eyes, I wonder if splitting is something to be expected with this type of eupatoria, or was my Y pruned plant doomed from the start. I'd certainly like to try again. Here it is in all its glory as a centerpiece.
