The article is fascinating, and the pictures are wonderful illustrations of Fun with Succulents. Your girlfriend has more than a modicum of common sense, I would think. I made a succulent planter out of a rectangular styrofoam box that had held frozen seafood. I drilled holes in the bottom and sprayed it with paint that is supposed to ressemble stone, planted a few different succulents in it and left it outside to fend for itself for about five years. I finally had to discard it when it deterioriated to the point of ugliness. The planters in your pictures look much nicer, but styrofoam will work. Recyclers might like that idea. That picture below "About Geoff Stein" is the teensiest bit disturbing, but it tells a story, I suppose.
