I`m not sure what kind this is. It was supposed to be a round black watermelon called Hokkaido Black watermelon. It is a big melon about 30 pounds and is dense and crispy sweet and Delicious! I wonder if it is a cross between the Hokkaido and moon and stars? I do have a few other melons that look just like the round black Hokkaido melons but this one is different from the others.

I think that first one is a moon and stars that only has one little spot that crawled over into the others. I`m beginning to wonder of the "Hokkaido Black melons" are Hokkaido Nots.

Anyways these two little gems are results of planting seeds from a market melon. I found seeds in a miniature seedless melon and planted them out. I have two results and really like them. The little melons are great.

One was little and striped.

Both had seeds like a normal watermelon. I`m going to grow some more from those seeds and come back if I get results from those. I hope everyone is having a great summer!

Karen,
This was my first year growing a veggie garden and really had fun with it. I waited too late in the year planting my watermelons, so not much luck with them. When did you start your watermelon patch? Lol, so I'll know next year.

Would you be interested in trading me a few of your Hokkaido Black seeds for some Sugartown Watermelon seeds?

Hi Dollie,

It is safe to start melons after danger of frost is over and the weather has warmed up good. For me that is April 15. I started my garden in mid to late May so about 90 days and I had melons.

I don`t have any of the original Hokkaido seeds. I`m kind of raising my eyebrows a little when I look at them though. They are little and round like the advertisement but they are dark green not black. Maybe they are open pollinated and a result of cross pollination? Maybe they get darker as they mature? I`ll show a picture of one of them later today.

I`m waiting on that one to get ripe so no seeds yet. I`ll let you know results over here. Sure, would love to trade.

Thanks Dollie,

Here is the picture I promised you of the Hokkaido black melon. It looks like it is getting darker as it grows.

Karen, I remember those growing up! Haven't seen them for sale in years around here.

I might find out information on getting seeds at our local feed store.

Thanks for posting your pictures.

If you don`t find any I`ll share some from this one. I`m wondering is the Hokkaido a regular seeded or is a seedless melon? I`ll find out soon within a month. lol! I got the originals from ebay. Karen
