Today I salvaged 2 chairs that were headed for the land field...Have I got an impossible task in redoing them? Should I have let them go? Is that where they will end up? HELPPPPPPPP!
Any suggestions as to where to start? My thought is to strip them (many layers of paint) sand to get rust off, prime then paint...Do I have a chance , are they worth the trouble?

You need to sand them enough to smooth them and then spray them with the product that incorporates the rust in the paint. Also make sure that no water can get into the ends of the pipes. Some of them had stoppers to stop that from happening. You can fill that in with all sorts of products or buy rubber caps to put over the ends. If the bottom of the pipes that touch the ground have rusted through and weakened, you can drive dowels into the pipes to give them strength. In other words, use whatever is necessary to give them strength again and and stop the rust. I never put mine on the bare damp ground but always on a dry surface.

Self-etching primer is what they use on cars that have had rust removed. It bonds itself right into the metal. Can't recall a brand name, but I'll bet a quick google search would give you lots of help.

There's also a Rustoleum heavy duty enamel primer that's made special for halting rust.

Thank you again. Started on 1 chair this morning. The chair is in great shape. I found 7 different colors on it and I don't think it was ever prepped before painting.
I worked until it got so hot outside I had to stop. Will go back to it hopefully on Monday.
Hope you will all have a good week end and go to Church Sunday.

Oh, boy; I have to agree! I wish you luck, dahtzu, but I love those chairs just the way they are. What character. Maybe you have to be a little nutty to love rust, but I pick up any old rusty thing I find and 9 times out of 10 everybody goes nuts over it. That's quite a find in my book.

Linda, I wasn't able to do anything on the chairs this morning and it is to hot outside now. i will hope to get back to them tomorrow. My chairs are all metal and boy are they hard to get so many layers off. I'm going back to Lowe's and look for paint stripper for metal. What I have is to liquid and runs off before it can loosen the paint.
You will have yours finished before I can really get started with mine.

I like the orange citrus stripper. It doesn't stink, burns the skin much less, and works well on multiple layers of paint. It takes a little longer than the methyl-ethyl-badstuff, but it can be used inside if you have a place with a floor that you don't care if it gets stuff on it. I keep it on hand to clean paintbrushes, too. My DH isn't as careful about cleaning them as I am. So I go after him cleaning up his messes.

I agree with the members who like the rust left “as-is”, with vines growing through as a garden sculpture. Also recently in some magazine or other I saw an old rusty chair placed before a fireplace (inside) and it looked so pretty as sort of a sculptural piece. Also inside with many books piled on seat as a sculptural piece holding books (quasi-table).

Do you have a sander and coarse sandpaper ? I used a mouse sander on some wrought iron and it worked pretty good , looks like that would get between the slats of metal . I've stripped a lot of metal and I like Zip Strip . Works good on wood as well .
I don't mean try sanding the paint off , I meant I used the sander after stripping and getting the paint off . It could be the coarse sandpaper will cut through the paint also , don't see why not . Might use a lot of sandpaper tho . digger

Worked a few hrs. this morning! This is the result. Still have a long way to go. My intention is to get the entire chair clean as the arms. like I said, I have a long way to go. This morning I put 3 coatings of stripper on and scraped after each on the chair on the left, and 1 coat of stripper on the chair on the right. Sanded some on the left chair. Boy was it good to finally see metal. Will put more stripper on both chairs the next time out.

DH has a small sand blaster but never thought about that. I have a rusty old contraption of some kind my SIL gave to me that I would like to clean up for the garden. I must take a picture of it. She had it for many years and then since she isn't a yard person asked if I wanted it. Now they all know I take anything someone is giving away. A perfect stand for a plant.

I bought a very large terra cotta pot that was painted with white and most of it chipped and DH sand blasted it and glad it didn't break. Now it sits waiting for me to paint it.

Those chairs will be darn petty when you have them finished. Looking forward to seeing more pictures.

Well! I think the hardest work so far has been today. It seemed like one of the chairs has become tired of stripper and refuses to strip for it anymore. I applied 3 coats and each time was only able to scrape 1 coat of paint off. Used the 2 sanders, very course paper and still some of the paint didn't turn lose. Then used rust remover hoping that would remove paint as well as rust. Didn't work. I'm tired, my arms and hands hurt ( I hope it's from the chair work and not that ARTHUR guy)

Do you have a nearby company where they could dip the chairs for you? The dipping removes all paint but I don't know the technical name for it. I doubt if the local strip club would be of any help.

It might be listed under paint removers for furniture in your yellow pages.

You've done so much work on them, I can feel all your aches & pains, but they are going to be so nice that everyone will want them.

You guys are so sweet. thank you so much for all your encouraging. There really isn't enough paint left on that one chair for it to be dipped. Both chairs are as smooth as a babies b. I just want to have them all metal without any paint before I prime them. I SHALL get them to that point the next work day. Have a Dr. app. in the AM , so will not work on the T to T monsters.
Have a geat vacation Linda, you have earned it. We will miss you.

There is a paint stripper that auto. body painters use. Works fantastic and fast. Also removes all rust. Forget the name . If your intrested, you could contact any auto supply store they will probably know what it is. Good luck with them.

I've stripped enough things in my life to know what hard work it is. Anyone seeing them for the first time, who never had that kind of stripping experience, would find it hard to believe how long it took.

Faye, sorry I didn't see this post a lot earier, I may could have saved you a lot of elbow work.
I stripped a metal sink base years ago, and used a spray stripper called Strip EZE, the greatest stuff since sandpaper! Then what little bit of paint that wouldn't come off, I used a small propane gas 'torch'. the kind you can buy at any home depot or Lowe's. burnt the paint right off and didn't hurt the metal, even the rust!
There were 10 coats of paint on that sink,,and one coat was the brightest orange I had ever seen. I can't imagine an orange sink base in a kitchen! lol

FINALLY FINISHED, and don't like them! Do not like the color so will be painting them again. This paint is just to shiny and not dark enough. Have added cushions to match the swing and they will look much better when the chairs and the swing metal match.

Thank you all for your support and praise on the chairs. It was very hard work and yes, I would do it all over again...lol (like having the second baby, after the pain dims) The chairs actually are more comfortable without the cushions, but I was trying to make them look like part of the swing set. They will match when I am finished with them...I am going to paint the chairs and the swing a much darker color than the chairs. Thank you all again.
