| I have all kinds of snakes around here...
A rattlesnake killed my cat several months ago...
What is the difference between a water mocisin and a black racer?
I have a snake that is pure orange
and one that is black on its back with an orange ring around its neck and an orange belly ...
would you need to see pictures of these to tell what the are?
I have several garter snakes around ... those I let them be ... its getting the cats and dogs to leave them alone. lol |

| Your snake with an orange ring around its neck is appropriately a Ringnecked Snake... a colubrid somewhat related to garter snakes. Water Moccasins have short, stout bodies with large, triangular heads with relatively skinny necks, and I think eliptical pupils. Black racers are sleek, long, fast-moving snakes (hence the name racer) and their heads are about the same diameter as their bodies. |

| I was standing on the rocks lining my pondless stream... hauling out some matted algae and cleaning out leaves (have you noticed more leaves falling before the color change??) Anyway, from between the rocks that I was standing on ...out 'flew' a snake. I don't know what kind, I don't know what it looked like, I don't know how big it was, but I saw it!! Now I wonder how many others are warming themselves in those rocks... oh man... |

| Thank you BeaHive
I think you may be right. He certainly had a bad day. I think the neighbor's cat might have got him. |

| not a copperhead... looks like a rat snake or relative (corn snake or milk snake). Looks dead, too. Looks somewhat run over. Head is wrong for a Copperhead and body way to long and thin (even for a juvenile).. .that's a non-toxic snake. |

| Thanks Palmbob thats Elaphe Guttata Guttata, Your run-of-the-mill eastern Corn snake. A colubrid snake (King, corn, milk, and Rat Snakes) Theyre perfectly harmless and even wild snakes calm down almost immedeatly when captured, C'mon people if the snake is not an immediate danger to you, and you can't identify it, Leave it Alone. No reason to kill these guys. |

| Hey Whitepointer ... I run into snakes all the time ... I do wonder what kind they are especially when one has me cornered in my GH ... Or when I've got my hand in my pond trying to pull leaves out and one curls around my wrist ... When one is lying in my mums or sitting in the front seat of my car ... Some times its hard not to have hurt them or know what to do if I don't know if it'll hurt me or not... they especially like living in the water meters ... I don't mind snakes at all ... I'm not afraid of them ... I just want to know what species I am dealing with ... especially when there are poisonous snakes also in my yard ... we have rattlesnakes, coral and water mocasins Part of my property is wooded and behind it is a wild life perserve. When it rains they are everywhere ... this winter I have come across several snakes in my GH trying to keep warm ... lol ... I know they are beneficial... just not to my pets ... I've already have lost one cat to a rattlesnake.
But I agree they should be left alone ... :D They are great in the yard ...
