I'm not entirely new to gardening but after living 20 years deep in the woods, I'm new to gardening in spaces with sun. Some of my new "sun plants" are veronica spicata - a group of "Royal Candles" and a few "Red Fox." These young plants have about 10-12 stems each. I've been deadheading here and there and they've been blooming nicely all summer. While weeding tonight I noticed a gazillion new little plants at the base of each main plant. I'm not familiar enough with these to know if the "newbies" are seedlings, new basal growth or both?
If this is how veronica increases... umm, what do I do next? If all of these mature, the plant is going to be extremely dense. Maybe too dense. Most of this will die back later this year when frost hits but when it comes up next year, do I thin it? Divide it? Leave it alone? (Was expecting to give all those new plants two years to establish but maybe this one is different.)
Thanks,
~Sharon (zone 5a)
