I know this isn't terribly original, but I must admit I was surprised how easy this was to do and wanted to share it.

I have a tall wild cherry tree that I have been hacking on, taking it down limb by limb. As I was carrying the limbs away yesterday, it occurred to me that the texture and color of the wood were pretty. That in mind, I cut several pieces off and put together this trellis using pipe cleaners (I'll do better next time!). Now I have something to let my little blue day flowers (did someone just say weed?) grow on so they won't take over the flower bed.

I'd love to see any homemade trellises some of you have made!

I have that same 'weed', growing at my backdoor, Ididn't realize it would climb. Maybe I'll get some now and put by a trellis of some sort. Thanks for posting this

I saw a write-up about it (probably in a weed identification chart) and it did say it would climb up or spread out. We'll have to see if this works!

The plant looks like “Wandering Jew”-although there must be a more PC name. I love your trellis, I haven't made any, but I may copy your idea!

Yes, I always heard it called Wandering Jew, too, but when I looked it up on the internet, I found it is actually an Asiatic Dayflower. It's in the same family as the Wandering Jew. Of course, I grew up referring to cicadas as locusts and dragonflies as witchdoctors so it's no surprise I had this one pegged incorrectly, too!

You're trellis looks great MissMary, I can't wait to try that now!!!
The plant you have there... I don't know what you call it but, it is very invasive... so put it where nothing else will grow!! It takes over.

Which plant is that? There's the Asiatic Dayflower, which we were discussing and Creeping Charlie, who is HIGHLY invasive. I have a yard full of it. I pull and pull and somehow it ends up in every garden picture I take! Is that the plant to which you are referring? Perhaps you see something else ... please let me know!

Is everyone talking about the pointy leaved plant with blue flowers ? I am and mine has been here for 5 or 6 years so far , hasn't spread , I'll pull it up if it gets out of hand . digger

See if yours is like this. I was reading about this plant the other day, which is sometimes mistaken for the Asiatic Dayflower:

If it is, you can Google "Virginia Dayflower" and learn more.

I love your trellis! I've been wanting to grow some clumping bamboo just so I can have it to build trellises and such with. Homemade is so much nicer than store bought. :)

Well, in my case, store-bought is probably more reliable and durable ... but it does have a way of making my garden my garden!

Hi, I was talking about the one with the blue flowers... I saw the pic of the asiatic dayflower and it does look like what I have. Maybe not invasive where you live but it is in my flower bed. It spreads all over and sucks up all the moisture.
It is kind of pretty if I could keep it in one place!!!

Yes, those things are invasive. They don't behave themselves well, that's for sure. One turns into twenty quickly. The only ones remaining in my flower bed are the ones on the trellis! I haven't had a major problem with them in my yard thus far -- keeping my fingers crossed.

Digger, I'm sorry -- I was going for a link to this flower, which has three lavender petals upon a plant that resembles the blue Asiatic Dayflower (hope these links work). Perhaps I'm wrong and this isn't like yours after all.

I really do like this one . Don't remember where I dug it up , but it was around here close . I have little iris about eight ins. tall growing in the woods around me . Wonder if they transplant easy ? also lady slippers across the road , in the woods . I know you don't mess with them and a coupla kids picked a bunch of them a few years ago . I run them off and told them I had a flower garden over there so they would'nt come back for more. They haven't come back like they used to be . D
