Yes, both fruits, but the strawberry has more in common genetically with a rose than a tomato. It is of the Rosaceae Family.

A tomato has more in common genetically with a habanero pepper or a potato than a strawberry. They are all of the Solanaceae Family.

Regular potatoes and sweet potatoes have nothing genetically in common either...sweet potatoes are genetically linked to morning glories.

Lots of fun when you start looking at the family trees of plants.

Lol, Lily_Love...I need a quick study on botany! Who would have thought a strawberry has more in common with a Rose! Tomato with a habanero pepper or potato?

Needless to say, each day I learn something new on Dave's Garden...Love this place!

Barb, we need to learn if the family Asters are all edible.

Definitely NOT!! Some species in the Asteraceae are dangerously poisonous, e.g. Senecio jacobaea.

I skipped the answer but after reading this I can see where the tomato and potato thing comes in. if you will look at the leaves on a tomato plant and then the potato plant you can see the similarities.

There are even some tomatoes that actually have the designation of 'potato leaf.' They are usually more rounded and have less indentations than 'regular leaf' tomatoes. There are also some weird grafted plants that have a tomato and a potato grafted together...(or so I've heard) I've never actually seen one though.

Lily,

Yes, D.G is the best! Dave was very blessed to have come up with the know how on getting DG off the ground and keeping gardeners interested in DG...and we're all blessed to be apart of this wonderful garden family...where we learn about gardening, share plants & seeds with each other, and make lasting, special friendships...not only in the states, but worlwide.

Lol, I agree with you about the "blacksheep" too ;)

I didn't even vote, just couldn't wait to get here and find the surprising answer--I woulda guessed the carrots and turnips, too, both roots. I don't know what lettuce flowers look like, and it wouldn't do any good to try to find out with all the bunnies in these woods, lol.
