I am visiting my parents and my dad brought me a cage at 7:30 this morning. In the cage was a baby squirrel. When my dad walked outside, it ran up his leg. Found out our neighbor said it was under my parents' car last night. Wish he would have told us. We would have brought him in last night. (Since we didn't find a squirrel hit by a car, we figure the mom was eaten by a hawk).
Called my friend, Linda, the rehabber, and we agreed to bring the squirrel to her in the evening. We were outside with the squirrel to see if any of the adults wanted to claim him. No one did. I was sitting on the ground, and he crawled up and sat on my shoulder. We moved my bird out of his cage, and put the squirrel in there. He immediately jumped into the food bowl, and started eating the bird's sunflower seeds, peanuts and corn. He is so young, when he lifts his front feet up to hold the corn, he tips forward. Very cute. We went out and bought him pedialite. Very cute.
Then this afternoon we went to Linda's. She is my friend who rehabs animals. She has a 3 week old fawn that was hit by a lawn mower, and lost its back leg. It is doing well and is healed up. Any animal that can be returned to the wild, will be returned to the wild. Others become eductaional animals. She has brother armadillos that she has raised from pinkyhood -- Chester and Hester.
She also had another squirrel dropped off today that was about the same age. Mine is about 1-2 weeks older and has a fluffy tail. Mine is a boy, and the other is a girl. Both are on solid food.
We also checked in on Midge, the otter. He is a sweetheart, and plays like my ferret. He kept jumping on my legs, and then running off to see if I would chase him. He is wonderful.
