My green beans are challenging me. The first 2 pickings, about 2 days apart, gave me perfect beautiful beans. After that they started to come in curled, plump at one end, extremely thing at the other end, and worst of all: they have little holes along the bean. The holes appear to be empty. Just little craters surrounded by a brown ring.
We still eat the beans although I sort out the ones with a lot of these holes. What can I do to prevent this? As I said the first pickings were terrific and perfect. Should I just pull them up after a couple of pickings and have successive crops?
You haven't said whether these are bush or pole beans.
Bush beans are usually determinate, meant to have only one crop. After that, the quality deteriorates. This could be your problem, and successive crops would be a solution.
The holes are probably bean beetles of some kind. A spray with something like rotenone should stop them.
I suffer from bitten beans and also have a terrible infestation of squash bugs. Everybody says "oh just spray with so and so". Nothing I have tried has been effective to my satisfaction. Can someone give me good advice I can take to the bank? Although not certifying, I do grow organically.
