I have purchased some seeds from Thialand & Hawaii, I live in SC and would like to grow them as I too love them, but would like to know when would be the best time to start the seeds? Would it be better to start in a greenhouse or just outside and bring in to a greenhouse for the winter? Look forward to a response as I am excited to begin.

Hi there ccb1108, I would start them now outside and then bring them into the greenhouse for the winter.

I actually have stopped sowing seeds since I wrote the article. Seedlings require so much water, transplanting, and space while taking years and years to bloom for the first time. I have six-year-old seedlings that are huge and that have not bloomed for me yet. They require patience for sure.

I'm leaving the seed sowing to the hybridizers in Hawaii and Thailand because they have acres and acres of land and sow thousands of seeds just to create a few good blooms. It is frustrating to wait for so long only to get inferior blooms when they do finally bloom, and this does happen alot.

I don't mean to discourage you, but you should know the truth about sowing plumeria seeds. I wish someone had told me this six years ago when I sowed 40 seeds. Truly, I wouldn't have bothered sowing them if I had known this. There are so many proven varieties that will bloom in the first season. I understand that the process of watching them grow can be fun, but it can also be trying.

Best of luck to you.

Clare

P.S. Here is a picture of three of my six-year-old seedlings. As you can see, they are quite big and lanky.

Thank you for the info. But I am unable to find anyone here in SC who actually sells these plants, so when I found seeds I figured that I would buy them (ebay) and give it a whirl, for my own pleasure and maybe try to sell some as I have started my own garden business and people ask me to purchase them some when I go to FL to visit my family even there they are hard to find in the summer time they are found down there more in the fall. So theank you, and I will still give it a try until I find someone who sells them close to me, so I can go check out the plants myself. I rarely buy plants online as I have before and gotten really horrible plants, and with no money to waste on plants, I want to see what I am buying. Thank you. Cheryl

Hi Cheryl, I totally understand. I just wanted you to know that difficulties that come with sowing seeds.

I totally understand about the hazards of buying plants online. I too have had some hits and misses.

If you do decide that you want to own established cultivars, Florida Colors Nursery in Homestead is a very reliable business. I have purchased online from them for over 5 years, and they have an excellent reputation as being an honest and reputable business. Their prices are the most reasonable of any plumeria business that I have seen, and I have checked out them all. If you don't want to buy online, you can buy from them in person. Just give Luc and Carol a call and tell them when you are coming.

Since you are buying for a business, I think they will sell to you wholesale, but you'll have to call them and ask.

Best,
Clare
