When one considers rubber mulch another concern should be noted: it is hard to remove in certain areas.

My yard has a large area of recycled mulch in a play area that is several years old. There is no odor, it is cushy and performs admirably as a weed barrier. However, it is a problem in the surrounding grass. Even with a good border, the mulch is carried by the children's feet and movement into the surrounding grass, and it chokes out the grass. We have tried raking it back in and using the blower, but that is not easily done nor is it very effective. Wood mulch would do the same, but there is comfort knowing that it will decompose rapidly (in comparison). The rubber bits in the grass seem (distressingly) just like litter. We are now considering removing the rubber mulch altogether and donating it to a family that doesn't mind that it gets into the grass - and stays there.
