I have a 12yr old Whirlppol dryer that appears to be on its way out. It is now taking a lot longer to dry clothes that normally took little time at all. We're having to put it on high heat for everything to get anything dried properly. Since its 12+yrs old, we are contemplating as to either having it fixed or just buy a new one.

If it can be fixed, where would I begin in trying to diagnose & figure out the problem so I could possibly repair it myself. Any suggestion on what might be going on here?

Electric or gas?

Is the vent totally clear of lint buildup? The run times and efficiency are affected BIG TIME with this one.
Had a relative's dryer plug it up - was a vertical vent through the roof - when we got most of the lint out with a straightened coat hanger hook, then turned it on - looked like a snow storm as the rest came out.

And the lint trap - is it clean? If that model uses the long screen than slips in from the top of the machine, there can be quite a bit of additional lint the the hole. There is a long narrow brush that will remove that.

I agree with the vent clogging up. Our builder was so awesome that he didnt cut a hole in the roof so the dryer had no where to vent to! needless to say when the problem was fixed the drying time was cut by 75% or more
