I just got this gorgeous orchid today as a gift! It is stunning and I wanted advice separate from the instructions on the tag of how to care for it ex. What light is best, soil, fertilizer, etc.

Thanks,
Antoinette

ps. Al, I know you have some expert words of wisdom of how to care for this plant!

I actually know very little about orchids, other than the little practical experience I have with a few terrestrials in containers, so I yield to those more expert than I. Thanks for the vote of confidence, though.

I DO hope you get lots of enjoyment from your present. ;o)

Al I think I found your weekness with orchids! LOL That's ok. I'll wait for more replies. I love my gift so now I have to learn quickly how to properly care for it :)

Your orchid is a Phalaenopsis.

Check the orchid forum, I'd help but I am a phal killer! I can grow the others just fine though.

Your welcome Antoinette. I have not been a Phalaenopsis killer yet. My three have been in constant bloom going on two year's now. Mine may "poop" out anyday but they have been easy houseplant's for me thus far.

I plant mine in orchid bark - you can buy packets from the garden centre. I have orchid fertlizer as well. During summer/flowering times I fertilize every 2nd/3rd watering. In summer I water about once a week to once every week and a half. I pour water through the pot to 'wash anything out' and then I leave it in water for about 10mins and then drain it thoroughly. In winter I water every 2-3 weeks.
