Sharon try 55 F for abnormally low... lol!

That species Hosta (Hosta laevigata) wasn't even discovered until 1996.
Found on a small island off the coast of Korea it's a gem.
Slug resistant and now being used in many hybridizing efforts.

Celia: love that last pic on the previous thread--nice patterns there!
Sharon: our schools started last Wed. (the 19th). We've been cooler than normal, too, and I'm not complaining either! LOL
Ric: Oh, wow, a slug resistant hosta--hooray! I guess my Illustris and other EE's have done so well even though they are not in water is because they are all covered with several inches of mulch which helps to keep the moisture in. Plus they are hardy down here so we don't have to bring them inside in the winter. :o))

The weather channel says our high today will be in the mid-80's with winds E at 5-10 mph. Currently sunny and 68F--very nice!

Ric: here are the two Big Dippers and the mystery EE. Wonder why the one Big Dipper is so much bigger than the one on the right?

I found this hummingbird on the brick step beneath the hummingbird feeder on the back porch this morning. He was still breathing so I picked him up and put him on top of some ajuga which I have in a pot on the back porch.

Kelli I don't think I've ever known anyone growing this outside of an arboretum.
Cool!
Krohne has a nice grandifloria.
Is that what yours is?
Plant shot?

Cool but lizard frying sun today.
Much like AZ or NM in March.

We got the Mechanical/Bio Filter up and running about 2 PM.
By 3 we could see an improvement in water clarity.
Now at 8:30 the water's clear enough to see down about 16".
By morning we may even be able to see bottom in the deep end.
It will take days for full Mechanical filtration to finish.
Weeks for the Bio part to kick in but so far...

After we field test it for a few days we'll do the final finishing touches and hide the works.
No rush we want to make sure everything is in top shape.
Once the bacteria kick in the filter should not need to be touched for years.
Notice the 'falls' are now throwing twice as much water.

Mine is P. sacharosa. I'll try to get a picture of the complete plant tomorrow when the sun is in the right direction. We grew ours from seed that we liberated from an arboretum. Whoever lives here next is going to wonder what all of the strange plants are. I would think the plants will outlive us.

How neat!
I've got a shot from the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix but it wasn't in flower.

One of the gardens here in Anderson is now undergoing just that thing Kelli.
Clara is still hanging on to their 1 acre botanical treasure.
Her DH and Gardening companion Charlie passed away last Winter.
She's in her 70's and and has downscaled just a bit.
Everyone is hoping the place passes on to a Serious gardener.
Definitely not the kids passion.
Their collection is 4 decades old now...

Good morning!

My baby is off to school this morning! Mixed feelings about that to be honest. She was a bit nervous this morning because her best friend is in the other class. She was fine once in the class room since she knows most of the kids from pre-school. Still hoping she and her friend can be reunited later in the fall. So grateful for our wonderful school. Selma started 6th grade yesterday ... just can't believe how fast they're growing up! She's the same age I was when I moved to Florida ... what a difference between 6th grade there and here.

Read all the posts and looked at all the photos - enjoyed them all but too many to comment on.

Bernie - so happy for you on your great crop and success at the market!

Adina - happy you got your photos back! What a scare!

Ric - the pond looks great! 63F would be perfect! lol Especially now - not likely to see 60F again until next year, summer is pretty much over here ... :-(

Kiska - love the hiking photos - looks like home! :-)

Well, feels like summer is over. It's windy, pouring rain earlier and around 50F, high will probably be in the low 50's.

Hope you all have a great day!

Lots of bargains. I got a nice old record stand for $105. A spoon carved chest of drawers with hankie drawers & ornate mirror, $60. Hardware on it would cost more than that.
A 40's coffee table in walnut with a drawer, $29. Our old one is rather tacky & has inlaid glass. Any time the grandkids spill something, it's a major job cleaning it up. Also a nice mahogany knick-knack shelf for $9.
My wife bought a ton of dolls & a cute doll bed, all for about $55. Good buys!
I will get pictures as I unload in the morning.
Earlier today, I picked up most of the lumber for our house addition.
We do something big every late summer when veggie sales are good. Last year we bought a used pickup & a different car.
Fun to pay cash for these things!

Another nice night, around 70 & star shine.

Sounds like some good finds Bernie!

I know what you mean about the hardware.
We bought an inlaid dresser once just for the crystal pulls.
The piece would have needed hundreds of dollars of restoration.
We stripped off the pulls and resold it for what we bought it for.
The knobs are on another piece we have of the same vintage and style but in far better shape.

It's already down to 70 at 11:20.
Sunset is at 8:18PM now.
W/ the clear air and low humidity it's like a desert sunset.

Good morning!

Cloudy and practically calm this morning, just got back from my morning walk and it felt just perfect :-) Temp around 50F. Time to put the tank tops and shorts away ... we'll have to get the snowsuits and boots out in about a month.

Celia - Congratulations to you and your cousin's family! :-)

Bernie - sounds like you hit some pretty good deals - so glad it's been such a productive summer for you :-)

Sharon - it's pretty hard to be without the internet once you're hooked! lol

Here's how the garden looks this morning

Hope you all have a wonderful day!

Good morning! You found some GREAT deals, Bernie! Can't wait to see the photos. :-)

Your garden is beautiful this morning, Rann. Did you/will you get any rain from the remnants of Hurricane Bill? It looked like it was heading for Scotland last I saw, so maybe it will miss you... It looks like Tropical Storm Danny is going to head up pretty much the same path.
I think to be an Ivan you have to weigh at least 8.5 pounds or have a beard... BTW
LOL, Ric!

I ran the sound board for a workshop at church last evening. The workshop went great - we had a wonderful speaker! - but sometime in the night it suddenly occurred to me that audio CDs are usually only 74 minutes long, and the speaker talked for 90 minutes and I didn't pay any attention to the CD recorder and I'll bet it ran out part way through the talk and I should have put in another CD... And since then I haven't been able to sleep. Rats. I hate goofing up and disappointing people. :-( I'm going to need a BIG Dr. Pepper to keep me going today - maybe several of them.

Our weather hasn't changed a bit since the beginning of the month.

Marylyn - don't feel bad. It's an honest mistake. I goof up so many times everyday that you wouldn't believe it ... pretty exhausting actually ;-) lol

Thanks for your comments ... it's a beautiful day today :-) After my morning walk I was planning on a swim at the pool but I can't find my swimsuit ... clearly it's been WAY too long since my last swim. Can't imagine where I put it ... For some reason things have a way of disappearing without a trace at this house ... I spend far too much time looking for lost things. Selma's cell phone went missing in January and we still haven't been able to find it. My rose clippers vanished in July and despite great efforts to find them they're still missing. I have a feeling they'll turn up in one of the flowerbeds when I start cutting the plants back. At least I hope so, I really miss them! lol Just hope I'll find the swimsuit soon, can't be without that for weeks or months .. and I really don't want to buy a new one, they're so horribly expensive right now.

Rann, so sorry to hear about your DH! I hope he finds another job soon.
Just a quick note...Andreea, my DD, just got her papers today, both the ID card and the driver's license so she can drive herself. I've been the driver until today and it's been exausting, mostly because she is always advicing me about driving...ugh! Sometimes she turns on the music louder which I don't like. Today I was stopped by a police car which had been following me ...grrr! The officer said I crossed over the red light which wasn't true and I sustained that...Andreea also sustained me...so he finally let me go and adviced me to be more careful. I think he just wanted to see Andreea closer!LOL It's happening all the time!LOL But I did have a scare although I knew I didn't do anything wrong and he knew that too!
It's hot outside, 92 and no wind!
This is what I saved from the birds!LOL

Good morning!

It's partly cloudy, the sun is shining, a light cool breeze blowing and 46F.

Thank you everyone for your hugs and support it means the world to me. He will be receiving 6 months pay, so we'll just hope he'll manage to find something else in that time. Unfortunately the job market is horrendous, especially for people with a business education ... so the prospects are grim. We'll just have to hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Which means we'll have to cut our expenses as much as we can until he finds something else. People here get unemployment benefits, but with me on benefits as well because of my illness that would mean a very meager income that would hardly support us. Especially with prices going through the roof. Not looking forward to this winter at all ... have a feeling it's going to be a monster. Not sure I'll handle having him home all the time either ... I'm used to a lot of "me" time the way he's been working in the past years so this will be a major adjustment! lol

Hope you all have a good day!

Haven't talked to my BIL in some time but he has to have a pretty good view of the smoke anyway Kelli.
Mt Lukens should be visible from his backyard.
They way I read the map the fire is about 2.5 miles north of In-N-Out Burger‎ on Foothill.

We had a very electrically active T-Storm come thru about 7 PM yesterday.
My serge protector popped out to the second level.
Don't think anything was hit but it was bright and loud!
Again almost no wind but .5" of rain.

The new fish are settling in nicely.

Today
Mostly cloudy with showers and thunderstorms likely until late afternoon...then partly cloudy late in the afternoon. Highs in the upper 80s. Northeast winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 70 percent.

We got 2.5" of rain yesterday and more is in store today. The good things about this is the rain is keeping "Danny" away from us.

I've been having probelms with my thyroid for the last couple of weeks. My TSH is in the normal range, but I am still having hypo symptoms. You guys know how much I hate being in the heat. I've been freezing and have actually gone outside to "enjoy the heat" while I thaw out! I scored one with the Dr. yesterday. He listened to me and has agreed to test my adrenal gland and he is rechecking my cholesterol and triglycerides (which are showing elevated due to the hypo symptoms). My appointment is at 9...I'm starving and have not had my coffee. Not the best start to the morning.

Rann: I'm just now reading about your DH losing his job--I was gone from home most of the day yesterday. I'm so sorry for you and your family and all the folks there in Iceland. As Sharon said, please let us know how we can best help you to weather this storm in your lives!

Bernie: beautiful furniture and great bargains!
Celia: congrats on the newest member of your family. Max is adorable. Get a lot of sugar for the rest of us!
Adina: so glad you were able to convince the police officer that you did nothing wrong.

Sharon: glad you were able to convince the doctor to do more tests--hope you get to the bottom of the problem--let us know what the doctor says today

I went to visit a dear old friend yesterday. Miss Lottie will be 90 years young in another month. She is an amazing woman and so sweet, too! She and Buddy were great friends--they would talk two or three times a week for at least an hour each time. She was like a 2nd mother to us--still is to me. I always enjoy visiting her.

It's been overcast here all day but no rain. Supposed to be 87F by late afternoon. Humidity is lower--57%. Really not too bad outside.

Have a good afternoon!

Bernie we had a day like that here too!
Until 3PM then another T-Storm ripped thru.
(BTW I think using the 'F' Word in August is a direct violation of Dave's policy... LOL!)
It's currently 73 and Calm.
But there is rain north and west of us so...

Celia hope you guys get better soon.

Rann I know personally some of what you are going thru.
We've been through it twice in three years.
All I can say is take a deep breath and relax.
It feels crushing right now.
Knowing your personality that will pass.
Then start your planning.

I spent a good deal of the afternoon in the Pond.
I'm going to grow webbed feet soon I think.
We have both the water features roughed in and just need to seal them.
Then we will conceal and trim the hoses.
Three sides are now done... we did some planting on the fence side today...
tomorrow we'll finish the short path side.
It was 'almost' crystal clear before I got in and stirred it up again...
so the filter we DIY'ed is working perfectly!

Pond Tip #1 Don't step on a foot long Koi... they are slippery.
Pond Tip #2 Don't stand in the way of said Koi when it's going full speed... lol!

The new planting.
There are 4 Perennial Ferns and a Helleborus foetidus in there among the Annuals and Tropicals.
The two Autumn Ferns (Dryopteris erythrosora) are evergreen as is the Hellebore.
So we should have some Winter interest.
The Sweet Potato vines, on the left, will turn and face the pond by tomorrow.
The right side is still under construction.

The new 'Brook'.
Basically to add air to the water and keep it moving in the shallow area.
The little fish love it!

We have about two dozen Goldfish.
4 7" Comets and 2 5" Shubunkins (basically Calico Comets) and a host of babies.
We swore we weren't going to get Koi but Bertie gave us a beautiful 10" Black/Gold one.
How could we refuse.
We almost lost him on the ride home due to a traffic jam.
I had to do CPR on it for about 20 minutes to get it breathing again.
No NOT Mouth to Mouth...LOL!
Seems fine now.

Thank you all for your encouraging words and prayers ... I don't know what I'd do without you guys to be honest. Absolutely paralized with fear ... Ric thanks for the good advice, at least I'm breathing ... going for deep breaths ... then the relaxation bit ... I'm sure I'll manage it eventually ;-) lol I so wish I had a job right know you wouldn't believe it ... or that I was well enough to go out and find a job ... the prospect of having to go to work as sick as I am is just terrifying ... not that anyone would want to hire a person that's not in full health at this time. There's plenty of healthy, energetic people out there who are able to put in the hours but don't have a job ... I think it should be against the law to fire a person that is the sole provider for his family ... it's just not right. So mad at the "#$%&)(/#( who made that decision.

Windy this afternoon and tonight. And Ric - I totally agree that F... in August should not be allowed but it happens every year ...

The pond looks great! Good thing the Koi survived .. I wouldn't have said no either ... they are SO expensive here it's just ridiculous ... still I'd love to have some ... and a pond big enough for them ... someday maybe when all this mess is over.

Off to bed now ... going for some sleep... and deep breaths ;-)

This photo was taken from the highest point along Hwy 107 between Cabot and Conway. This particular spot is being developed as a housing subdivision--even on down into the valley where you can see the pond. They are still working on the streets--no houses have been built in here yet. They sort of stopped development for a while after the housing crisis this past year but they appear to have resumed working on it.

HI! Everybody!

Rann, I'm sorry to hear about your DH losing his job. Like all the rest here ... if there is anything I can do to help, please don't hesitate to let me (us) know. I, like Ric, know what it's like to be w/out a job...Since Mar. of 2005 I have not had a 'real' job intil now. My Dh got permanently furloughed (laid off) just before Christmas last year. Remember...when a door closes, another door opens! Hang in there, honey. We're here for ya! And Ric's right...deep breaths & have faith.

Ric, the pond looks WONDERFUL! :D I would like to see pics of your fishies, too! ;)
Bernie! Love all of the neat things you found at the auction! Wow!
Kelli, I haven't listened to the news since yesterday...how is the fire? I hope all is well...Stay safe!
Mau, between FB & HGTV, I've not been getting much accomplished! ;)
Sharon, Hope that your thyroid gets straightened out real soon...I know you're terribly uncomfortable.

We had an interesting week at work...the 300 gal. tank in the break room downs stairs sprung a leak! And the co's prized possession was in there. A baby fresh water Ray. It was also an explosion waiting to happen! We had to get the fish & ray out ASAP ( they are now up in the lab w/me) & they ordered another 300 gal. tank to replace the old one. So Monday, we'll have to move them all back down stairs...probably won't be until Tuesday...cause we'll have to 'sanitize' the new tank.

Gotta go pull some weeds...

Looks like we're thru the wet weather.
72 now after an absolutely beautiful day.
Highs will slowly rise thru the 70 to mid/upper 80's by next weekend.
Lows around the mid 50's. Clear... this is mid Sept weather.

I didn't find my filter so the fish shots are not very good.
But you'll get the idea.

And the Koi.
It's kind of a dark brown w/ orange/red speckles on the scales.
The weird thing is the yellow highlights.
Right under the dorsal fin is a yellow line you can just see here.
Since it's color just about matches the pond bottom the only thing you can usually see is that yellow line.

It's funny how tastes range.
The Butterfly Koi command bit bucks here in the USA.

In Japan these are the varieties most prized.
http://www.dorsetkoikeepers.co.uk/css/KoiVarieties.html

http://www.usakoi.com/buyKoi.php?id=200552&page=2

In Japan the 'Big Buck' Koi have gone for $250,000 and up.
These are private sales and for tax purposes the prices aren't definitely known.
But a friend was over there and she knows of a sale where the tickets were $100,000.00.
Ticket price refunded on your purchase! Jeez!

We will probably get another one next Spring.

Good morning!

It was a beautiful sunny day yesterday and it's sunny again this morning. Supposed to cloud up this afternoon. Practically calm this morning, and about 46F.

Thank you Joey and Kiska. Your support means so much to me and I'm very grateful for your prayers. We really need a small miracle. My DG angel renewed my subscription for another year ... I'm at a loss of words. Whoever it is - Thank You! :-)

Ric - your fish look great - that Koi is BIG! lol Unbelievable how expensive they can be.

Joey - those butterfly Koi are pretty neat! Never seen them before. You have the coolest job! I'm so happy for you :-)

The stress overload of the last two days is already taking its toll ... I'm a total wreck at the moment. The fibromyalgia makes me very vulnerable to stress, to keep it under control I need to be pretty much stress free ... this overload is making it flare up again. Big time. Woke up this morning with a splitting headache so I couldn't fall asleep again. I'm off to the pool for a swim, hopefully that'll do some good.

Well, hope you all have a wonderful day! This is Potentilla nepalensis 'Melton Fire'

My DD is leaving tomorrow and we are having a Fish Meals Day today...I guess me and DS will starve, we don't like much fish in any meal like DD and my DH do.

Adina once again I am amazed at the progress there in your yard.
Having seen the progress of both the house and property from a dream to reality has been a joy!

Joey those are Clown Loach (Chromobotia macracanthus).
I assume your owner knows to triple bag them as they have some serious barbs.
Beautiful fish but only once have I seen them kept correctly.
Our Local Aquarium has a 1000 gallon tank w/ about two dozen.
They get huge (about 16") and love to be w/ other clowns. Say 5 or more.
A tank the size of our pond would do it! LOL!

58F under cloudy skies this evening. We have had some nights with lows in the high 40's this past week. and it sure feels like fall is lurking today. Looks like highs in upper 60's to low 70's the next 6 days, lows in the upper 40's with plenty of sunshine and no rain forecast until next Sunday.

Looks like the heirloom tomatoes I started from seed last spring are falling prey to late blight. Luckily I've already had quite a few ripen so it won't be a total loss.

rann...So sorry to hear the bad news. Follow Dyson's and Ric's advice and hang in there. I have no doubt you will make it through this. After all, you wouldn't be living in Iceland if you weren't tough!

ric...That pond looks like it's been there for years! Amazing job!

adina...Your gardens look like they have been there for years! Amazing job! (seems like I'm repeating myself)

Spent yesterday in Wisconsin. We were at Maxine's, (Maxine). Also there were Marie, (marie_), & Jeff, (allnitro). Maxine served a great "farmer" Sunday dinner, Boiled potatoes, corn on the cob. & pork roast. She topped it off with homemade apple & pie & ice cream. We all tossed a few of her fresh raspberries & blackberries on top as well.
After dinner we toured her gardens. She has hundreds of Lilies of all types, lots of peonies. & assorted other flowers. Maxine has had health problems this summer, so her gardens are not up to photos right now.
Here are Marie & Maxine busy putting things away after dinner.
Maxine has a beautiful log house, she & Archie built after retiring from life long farming.

I'd say August will hit the books too.
It's already back up to 55.
Going for 72.
We should be at 80 by Weds and then thru the next week after that.

Looks like the Pond has cleared back up after the filter work.

Another very pleasant day here today ... very slight breeze, partly cloudy and a high around 56F. These are the last days of summer so I'm trying to enjoy them!

Bernie - very nice shots from your trip. I enjoyed them very much :-)

Adina - your garden looks so good!

EB - Your garden also looks great! That is on HUGE tomato!

Dyson - good advice :-) Thank you! And sorry to hear you've been through this too.

Up until a year ago, if you had a university degree and a job ... you were set for life. People loosing their jobs was practically unheard of. Employers aren't as quick to fire a person if the mess up as they are in the US. Unemployment has been close to zero in the past years ... so this is very new to us up here ...

Thank you everyone for the hugs, prayers and good advice. I'm truly grateful for all your support. I'm feeling slightly better today ... started back at the gym after a few months break and took a dip in the pool afterwards. Works wonders :-)
