Planted the last of my Butterbush squash seeds indoors this year, 2 came up and planted them by my patio, where the cauliflower I started this spring was planted (and harvested by bunnies). Hoped they did better here at home than they did at the pure clay no soil spare garden plot last year - barely softball sized, really bothered by squash bug, and when I cut one open, it was a hollow shell. Good soil definitely helps - have not been bothered by squash bug or other pests (knock on wood) and got at least 8 large squash on each plant. I know that because, one plant has the classic butternut coloration of light green squash ripening to a tan color, running about 2 to 2 1/2 pounds. The other plant has darker green striping and mottling over a light green background, and the squash are about twice the size, close to 4 pounds. In the past week, the oldest of those squash have been turning tan in the background areas, but the darker green is still there. Is this common for butternuts?
