Here in Austin our water is extremely alkaline. If fine screening is used to cover the pot drainage hole, it fairly rapidly (6-8 months) becomes clogged with calcium carbonate. When this happens the ability of the pot to drain well is altered and eventually stopped, creating waterlogged soil----very bad for succulents and cactus. So I use crocking---broken potshards---it is much harder for the calcium carbonate deposits to completely close off the drainage hole. Very nice article, lots of good information. Thanks.
