Hello Kathy
I found your article when i was looking for info on using manure. I enjoyed your no-nonsense approach to the subject and was hoping that you might take the trouble to answer some of my questions. Although I'm not new to the gardening scene I'm still on the learning curve for what works on this continent, having moved to Ontario, Canada, just 4 years ago from Africa.
I have some aquaintances who are beef farmers so I figured they might let me come and collect some manure. Question is - what do I do from there? I have a largish bed which I cleared of all growth this summer and was thinking of just spreading the manure on there and perhaps covering it with leaves in the fall. I could put an old tarp on top to keep things from flying away.
I have big 'compost heap' - a dump of all things from the garden, and some of the stuff looks very nice after 4 years of piling up. But it does contain weed seed!! Is advisable to use it at all?
Sorry to load you with all these questions!
And just one little tale from a previous experience with using manure. Back in Zimbabwe i managed to get my hands on a lovely pile of manure which looked quite well rotted so I put it around a couple of lovely old rose bushes. Termites found the remainder of the straw attractive and when they had finished eating that they carried on with the bark and roots!
Thanks, Sabine
