I have been making such table-top landscapes out of styrofoam, which is used for packing electronic goods in India. This material, which is useless otherwise, can be converted in to beautiful artefacts. Pieces of styrofoam are stuck with an adhesive. The structure thus created is etched with hot soldering iron, to give it the texture of stone. After this it is painted with acrylic colours.

Thanks all for appreciating my work. Hi Sammut, I am using 'Synthetic Resin Adhesive'. In India, it is available in brand name of "FEVICOL". Adhesive containing nitrocelulose will make the styrofoam dissolve. I shall try & find more technical details about this adhesive & then write back. I am adding another tray landscape of Tree machaan (raised platform for observing wildlife.). The tree trunk too is made of styrofoam.

Nandan, your work is wonderful. All the detail is amazing! Looking forward to seeing more of your work. Have you thought of using a dremel tool. I would think the hot soldering iron on styrofoam would smell!

Wow very beautiful work.. My daughter was in a Childrens Mardi Gras parade and we had to turn her wagon into a float.. The idea of using styrofoam came to mind.. So we used it to build her float.. BUT her float was much MUCH bigger than your little table top landscapes, so Im pretty sure her float was much easier than your landscapes.. . You did such a great job.. I can't imagine trying to do something so tiny with stryofoam and with so much detail.. wow.. OH and it looked like it had been snowing in my living room while we were cutting the styrofoam.. lol. I said never again.. lol

LOL.. I had to go search for the pictures from the parade.. Our strawberry was nothing compared to what you can do with stryfoam.. lol..

Here is a couple of her pictures from that day.. Wow If I would have had you carving the strawberry it would have looked like a real strawberry.. lol.. but this was 5 years ago.. and I think we did pretty for that time.. and she loved it.. it was only for a day thing.. after it was all over she wanted her wagon back.. lol..

Oh and even the little snail that follwed along behind her float was made from Stryofoam.. we Hotglued a kids skate on him and it looked like he was just floating down the road behind her.. :-)

Hi Taters55,
What is dremel tool? Could you give me the details? it is not available in India. Yes,using soldering iron gives offensive fumes. Thanks,

Dremel is a small, multi-purpose power tool. You can cut, drill, grind, etch, all kinds of things. I couldn't live without mine. :)

Styrofoam is one thing that will never ever disolve and will be in the landfills for eternity. If only you had some way to develop a business using your skills.
What a beautiful craft. Where there is a will, there is a way. Bless you.
