What is the easiest way to clean privet hedge and honeysuckle off of a fence that has long been left neglected? We want to pull the privet hedge out by the roots and just wondering if we should spray with round up first then pull up or if there is a better way.
I do not know if you plan to add plants right away or to have an unplanted fenceline, but to kill woody plants, you want to use TRICLOPYR, an herbicide manufactured for the control of woody plants. You can find it at your local garden center under the names Brush Be Gone and Brushkiller. Depending on how long the plants have been there and how close to the fence they are, pulling them out could result in damage to your fence.
There are two options: I) spray the shrubs with the above mentioned products according to directions repeating as necessary, or 2) Cut the shrubs down to ground level and immediately paint the freshly cut stumps with the above mentioned product using it full strength (undiluted)
You did not mention whether you wanted to keep the honeysuckle, but if you do, I would suggest using the second method.
If you use the first method, you can dig out the dead shrubs after they brown out completely.

We want an uplanted fenceline for a while (it is just a pasture right now where we plan to build eventually). It has grown up enough to make it hard to drive through the gate and it will just look much better cleaned up. And, no we don't want the honeysuckle either. So, I guess it will be easiest to go with spraying the shrubs with Triclopyr and digging them out. Do you know how long it takes for the Triclopyr to kill the plants?
No, I really can't give you a time frame, but if you also have roundup, my husband says you can mix it with the Troclopyr and it will hasten the process. A couple weeks should be about right...may have to spray a time or two.You can, since you are not immediately replanting, apply to the ground around the roots...mix in a bucket and pour it directly on the ground over the roots. just remember to read all cautionary statements for your safety.
