Should have added that too, huh Dave??

DG had birthday #9 just this month. (almost last month now)

19th of August, 2000...Dave went on line with his trade list. No forums, no GWD, no PlantFiles, no BugFiles or BirdFiles. I think when I joined on Jan 7, 2001 that he had just launched the 4th forum or so, and there were less than 400 members.

We now have 476,052 members world-wide.

It was like life just began when I joined Dave’s lol It’s been so long I can’t even remember how I stumbled across Dave’s probably had something to do with the PlantFiles I wish I could remember! lol

Thank you Dave for all of your hard work! Did you ever in your dreams think your site would be this big! To have such a wonderful caring person with a LOT of patients is just the icing on the cake there is no place else that I could ever even think of being ;-)

My gardens are just full of smiles all because of you, thank you for that too!

Due to google search results and to the quality of content in Plant Files, I've been visiting that area for a few years. Checked out the rest of the site on a rainy day in June 2009 and signed up for a trial within hours. It was a no brainer to extend membership at the end of the 60 days!

Thanks for DG site! It's now a regular part of my day and have learned so much from it this summer. Looking forward to continued enjoyment and enlightenment here.

4 years and 22 days. My how time has flown! I would have guessed 2 years, but found the actual date on "my info".
I kept doing searches on the plants I wanted to buy and kept landing on Dave's Garden with the picture of the plant and the comments of those who grew it and a list of areas where it grew. Pretty soon I looked for the home page. In no time I joined and not long after that the Rocky Mountain Forum was started. Now it is hard to get my housework and dishes done. Too much fun to be had on DG and in the garden.

I will have 5 years on the 24th of this month! I found Dave's 7 months after I moved from FL to Maryland and knew NOTHING about gardening. I mean nothing - in zone 9/10 FL plants don't die and come back next year, leaves don't fall and there is no last frost date. Thanks to Dave's and the friendly people on here willing to share their heaps of knowledge I can speak "garden" and am actually the go to person at work with all gardening questions! I have even met in person, eaten with, been to their house, become friends and traveled with people I met on Dave's.

Where else can you say all that about "just" a website? Many thanks to all who contribute to my life through DG!

Why, Jon. Made me blush. I'm kind of a nut. If I can make someone smile, it makes my day. It still amazes me how we can sit here and converse with someone in Japan and it's like he's right next door.

And Nan (Happy Birthday, by the way), I still hang out on the "other" site (GW) but this is usually my final stop and I stay here longer. I am a newbie gardener, as well as a DG newbie and have learned more lurking here in the past two months than I have reading garden magazines for the past 10 years. I joined when the annoying drop-down ad was running. Had just about made up my mind to join but then encountered that monstrosity and had to inquire of the administration whether that was typical. I was told it was not and that we could even control the ads with a paid membership. That got me and here I am.

The other thing that got me (and this may matter to Dave) was the ease of adding photos. On the "other" site, many forums require html format, which means you have to have another website from which to export your photos. Here, we can use just plain old jpegs. Download them from your digital camera to your computer, upload to Dave's and there you are. Simple even for non-computer-savvy people (like me).

I do have a Facebook page with several albums, one of them my "garden," such as it is, that will successfully upload to the "other" site. But this is soooo much easier.

I am so glad to be here and I look forward to one day being able to say I've been on DG for 10 years (or more).

I'm a new critter to the Garden (about a month). You can find me hiding in the cacti with the lizards. :) If you're patient, you can spot a freckled back, wide rump, short dark-brown and purple mane and twinkly eyes poking about the thorny bits in my container-garden.

I love anything that flowers, produces fruit, or has unusual foliage. I know very little about most of my acquisitions, but Plant-Files really helps this newbie figure out just what she's gotten herself into!

I've managed to rescue part of the Hoya I nearly killed (YAY!), learned about some of the cacti I got from the Mother-In-Law's yard, and I can finally put names to a few plants I've had for years but didn't know the names of because the folks who'd given them to me didn't know either (Haworthias are COOL)...

I haven't bought a subscription yet, but I likely will!

I clicked 6-8 years but really 5.5 as a *participating* member, because I joined to do some searches, then didn't come back for a year, when I learned about the forums & chat and subscribed for 1 month and way before that month was up I upped it to a year, and shortly thereafter gifted my mom (BloomsWithaView) with her first year's sub. Because of that month, her membership rolls around to renew earlier than mine, so it acts as a reminder for me!

I mostly hang out in Plant Identification because I just love the brain stimulus of figuring out puzzles. I especially "dig" (ha ha, gardener's humor) communicating with people all over the world, and the crazy live chat we sometimes have, when I remember in time that it is Tuesday. Also the really LIVE times when local DGer's get together for RUs and Garden Parties. Also the new newsletter, also this also that. Yup it is too hard to pick a favorite!

I quote from CapeCodGardener:
"Best $$ I ever spent on anything related to gardening!"

And from Woofie:
"DG is the greatest thing since seeds!"

And GardenSox:
"I was lurking around the free parts of the site for a couple years before I actually signed up."

And SoCal, who is herself a nice garden person:
"I have met some of the nicest and friendliest garden people around the whole world"

I quote a lot. But at least I give credit!

Dave does rock and DG is not just a site to me but an important part of my life. I have very strong feelings when I read of people who either say they can't afford it or the worst, "I don't see why I should have to pay when other sites are free". Nonsense! At six cents a day I just have trouble with that reasoning. One cup of coffee purchased at a deli or one unnecessary car trip to town or any impulse purchase all adds up and it could easily pay for a subscription.

For those who truly cannot pay there is Dave's Angel Fund.

As far as the notion about not having to pay...if being part of DG saves you from one bad purchase, or keeps you from making a big error with buying the wrong shrub, or saves you from disaster with anything to do with gardening then it is worth so much more than the price.

None of the above reasons even include the numerous forums with interests other than gardening. From home repair to remodeling, to sewing, cooking, fossils and birds (and bees) there is a whole world here of such helpful people.

My life would not be as wonderful without the friends I've made at DG and I am so grateful for them. How could anyone put a price tag on friendships?

Bet you can't tell I love DG!

I remember googling "gardening" often to see what was around. I found
http://www.garden .com in the late 90's. Ugh. Whoever thought a site could thrive
by selling plants from a bunch of sources. I found DG and at first thought it
was a bit goofy to have to pay. But then a good friend kept talking about the
wonderful coops and swaps she participated in until I finally paid for a subscription.
(Maybe in 2003 or 2004?) And I've been a DG addict ever since.

Back a couple years ago a member was moving to the country from the city. There were many problems with the little farm they wanted to buy. Lots of DG members chimed in with some good advice. Saved them a bundle if they had hired a lawyer for the same advice.

And the Round Up's. Over half the plants in my yard are from plant swaps at Round Up's.
Heading off to KY RU in a week & a half.

This just showed up in my Inbox, and somehow it seemed appropriate to the discussion at hand and the sentiments so many have expressed:

Every single evening
As I'm lying here in bed,
This tiny little Prayer
Keeps running through my head:

God bless all my family
Wherever they may be,
Keep them warm
And safe from harm
For they're so close to me.

And God, there is one more thing
I wish that you could do;
Hope you don't mind me asking,
Please bless my computer too.

Now I know that it's unusual
To Bless a motherboard,
But listen just a second
While I explain it to you, Lord.

You see, that little metal box
Holds more than odds and ends;
Inside those small compartments
Rest so many of my friends.

I know so much about them
By the kindness that they give,
And this little scrap of metal
Takes me in to where they live.

By faith is how I know them
Much the same as you.
We share in what life brings us
And from that our friendships grew.

Please take an extra minute
From your duties up above,
To bless those in my address book
That's filled with so much love.

Wherever else this prayer may reach
To each and every friend,
Bless each e-mail inbox
And each person who hits 'send'.

When you update your Heavenly list
On your own Great CD-ROM,
Bless everyone who says this prayer
Sent up to GOD.Com

My namesake, the real PIRL, was a wonderful former neighbor who taught me to garden. At 88 she could no longer get up from weeding, due to arthritis, so she used a long handled weeder. She continued on maintaining her own garden, except for the mowing, until she was 95 and died at 102. If DG was around back then she'd probably have never stopped!

I have no doubt I found Dave's on a google search for a plant, coming to Plant Files. Curiosity about getting into the forums brought me to subscribe and I've been here ever since.

I've met so many wonderful people, both here on the 'net and in person. Attended my first Roundup in Tenn and the second in Ky. Been to so many in Florida now that I couldn't keep count anymore.

Friends here have helped me through bad times and good, making no judgments, always supportive. Should I ever go on a road trip again, I know I could stop in most every state and be welcomed by friends I have met here.

A cult? An addiction for sure. I tried to break it a couple times (just to see if I could) and didn't last 24 hours. Couldn't stand to be away from my gardening friends for that long.

Way too funny Carrie about 'the cult'. My DH is very relieved that I joined DG. He thought I was the only one singing and gardening in their pjs.

Singing and gardening in pj's, now that would be a kodak moment.

Petalpants- thanks for the welcome! :) I'm actually really getting into this place, and I've actually sent off my first plant trade to a fine lady who has a treasure trove of cool in her haves list. Egad, the stuff she has. All I have are a few Haworthias, some Aloes and lots of random kalanchoes. :P

I don't mind the pricklies, except for the fuzz you get from Bunny Ears. That stuff gets into everything! And Eve's Needles, those suckers are an EVIL two inches long! O___O I'm fermenting a Cactus Pear right now to see if I can get some of the seeds to sprout. :) Yay for edible cacti!

I'm so sorry I missed this one. Though I'm late getting here I've really enjoyed reading everyone's posts.
It'll be 9 years for me in November. And I spend every morning and every evening here too.
