Good morning Gypsies, Rebels and Friends. Welcome to part number...welcome, I don't remember what part this is...grin

In yesterday's episode...JJ's finished the BR project and chased the children out of the corn...

Kassy got ready to tour the 40...finally,grin...and changed out the potpourri...LOL

Rachel returned and I proceeded to confuse her completely with goldfish and guppy plants...I'm so sorry

Jim lead a Hootenanny and did what he does best...makes folks feel better

Lynnie killed white flies on the corn and rewarded herself with dark chocolate...way to go Lynnie

Dave brought us tons of beauties to look at and shared his vast knowledge of plants...what a guy...grin

Venice led us in a wake for Wilty...Lambic and Tequila all around...Farewell with the fairies Wilty...grin

Trina continued the battle of the Buh-zillion plants...I know they all have names...lol

Flowers joined the band and celebrated with snickers and Pepsi...

Smileymom pondered a name change...waiting to greet the new and improved moniker...who will she be? GRIN

Ican, babeegirl, Cat, dixiegril and Chezca were all off in other pursuits...what could be more important than Basil????

and I did what I do best...proceeded to bring everyone to the same level of confusion I work at...sorry guys...it will happen again...LOL

If I missed anyone, I am so sorry, just remember who is typing this and know it was not intentional...Grin

I think that brings us up to date...shall we dance?

gotta tell this one guys, When I was about 14 paper everything was in, (curtains, clothes, tablecloths you name it) Well I found some pretty gold and silver paper and decided to make me a mini skirt, pants and a vest of this pretty paper. I cut a pattern out by hand and sewed by hand. Not bad looked pretty good with a nice silk blouse. Well to make a long story short, Went to the teen center for a dance with my gold mini skirt and vest. Well started to dance to "Wipe out", we had a live band and I was trying to impress the drummer whom I was infactuated with. Honeyyyyy that stuff started coming apart at the seems, needless to say I went home early from that dance lol Moral of this story is always wear leggins when wearing paper skirt and dancing to wipeout

Columbine anyone?
I gave away 23 of these when hey first came up this spring, hoping to thin them out. Two years ago I transplanted 3 back here and now I got this.
For those who are afraid the preen will stop seeds in the spring I use it every year right after my plants come up and again in about late july. Didn't stop these from multiplying.

JJs, good morning. Jim said in his last post somewhere around here (grin, can't keep up) that they went to visit a shut-in and sang a few songs and played his guitar last night. I know I probably left out a lot of stuff, but there is always a lot going on...grin BTW Kassy's B-day is in March, sorry for the confusion...see I told you I was good at that...LOL

Don't remember the name, but am sure it is a weed...what good plant would grow so well and have so many buds that fast? Looks like it would just love to explode seeds everywhere...lol

See ya later Flowers

Good morning everybody...sorry i'm late I got my broom cuaght in the door!!

No seriously I am so bad I was ADDING plants to my want list...as if I don't have enough already!

But on the plus side...My husband is setting the footings for my year round greenhouse/conservatory this morning...yeah for me! But it won't be done until spring not soon enough to rescue my "gift" plants but I am starting to win that battle ... or at least I think I am...wooohoo

I would...but then I am liable to pull up anything that looks like it could take over. Had an aquaintence ask if she could store a few plants in my green house last year while she was moving...dummy me said sure, no problem...I now have 17 new weeds that are about to eat my garden alive...including some kind of grass that got in one bed and while we were gone this summer took slap over. I have been spraying, cutting, ripping and cussing and still haven't managed to get rid of it...so pushy it is swallowing the bee balm.

My DHJim thought he could get out of helping with the weeding by pulling up a few seedlings...took pictures of the weeds that needed to go and handed them to him...told him it was a guide to a happy marriage...grin

Yep garden art, but years back my son did have a iquana, stunk to high heaven, ( he wouldn't keep cage clean) I opened the window and the cage and chased him out and down the street so he wouldn't be able to find it. Was a site to behold I'm sure.lol

I have alot of that grass that creeps everywhere too, if ya want some. Can't get rid of it.

I have my yard sprayed every sprng because the creeping charlie in my neighbors yard is terrible and tries to come over and even that doesn't kill that grass. We call it watergrass but don't know what it really is. Sprayed for crabgrass that didn't kill it either.
Well I better head for the grocery store or there will be no supper tonight .

As we say in the south, JJs, You are too kind...grin No thank you. I have enough of my own personal green hellions out there.

I had an Iguana named Ignatius, Iggy for short (how original, LOL). He was a lovely pet, but we left him with a sitter service when we went on vacation, and they cleaned out his cage and decided to use kitty litter to "keep the cage fresh". Iguana's eat by scooping up their food...Iggy scooped up a bunch of kitty litter and it shredded his esophagus and stomach. My SIL was in Vet school at the time and she took him in to Necropsy and see why he died...said she couldn't tell if he bled to death or starved to death, but it was a buckdancer's choice as to cause...Critter sitter service said...oh so sorry, you owe us $75 for pet care...guess what I told them...can't write it here...GRRRR. But, it did involve street coeners and a "professional" way of making money.

pretty roses. I have a few across the front of the house, but one of my absolute favorites is a climber called Don Juan...it has a full rich spicy smell similar to cloves and is a deep red...the other two climbers are Ice Berg, a small bloomed white with a sweet light fragrance that just blooms its' butt off, and a thornless old Burbon rose called Zephrine Drouhin, that is a soft pale raspberry color and has a sweet fruity fragrance.

This is Don Juan

Thanks Venice. Yep, that is the exact model camera I have. I found it a bit daunting at first, but it really is very easy to use if you read the owner's manual...like I didn't...grin

Boy, seems like Fall is roaring in with winter close behind...may have to take a hiatus from the band to get all the stuff done that rain put off...but I can still play at night I guess, if I can stay awake...grin

Smiley, I discovered that they seem to thrive on a bit of neglect...I killed my first one with kindness, got a second one determined to MAKE it grow...almost killed it too...grin then I figured out that it just wanted a nice sunny place to lean up against, a little food 2 or 3 times during the growing season and a little protection from japanese beetles. The one in the picture is about 12-13 years old, so it can be done...grin (glad you are here)

mine kept getting WHACKA-WHACKA-WACKED with the garage door (I was stupid-didn't even know it was a climber) so we tried to move it.

back to work. someone is running a lottery scam / mystery shopper scam on our bank account (employer, not my own) . It's more of a pain in the butt than anything, but I keep having to verify checks, field phone calls, etc..

jeez, all that energy put into something illegal. Imagine what this world would be like if all that bad energy was used for good things??

See if it comes with a warranty...although the blurb did say new. we have had reconditioned cameras before and had no problems with them...usually R/C means new lens and a complete cleaning. If it has a warranty, the place is reputable. Many camera shops deal in R/C trade ins and they are usually just fine.

Dave I will let the weed bloom and take a pic when it does.

Lynnie we are gonna need a few extra reps this month.

This is what I found on them, because I have to figure out what I am going to do with the rest of them yet...

Cooking

Puffballs have a rich, penetrating, earthy flavor. These gourmet mushrooms won't get lost in a recipe, even when there are lots of other ingredients or strong seasonings. I've baked pear-shaped puffballs into an intense wild sourdough bread, the mushroom flavor emerges strong and clear.

Puffballs stand up to virtually every form of cooking. You can sauté them, simmer them in soups, cook them with grains, and even bread and bake them in a casserole if they're large enough. They generally cook in about 7-15 minutes. The smaller species dehydrate well. To store the larger ones long-range, cook and freeze them.

Kassy, Trina and the rest of you northern guys --

I have been reading too much tonight and have a bundle of questions. I hope someone can help me.

How do you cover your plants for the winter? Mine aren't right next to my house and we get all weather coming from Chicago. I can only get products that come in small bags like at Lowe's.

I am planning to pull up all the annuals, tomatoes, etc. and would like to spray for bugs and fungi. Will the soap mixture work? Or the one Jim uses for fungi, 2 T soda and a little Ivory in one gallon water?

Also, what do I use when I bring the avocado trees inside? I read somewhere to use a soap solution 5-7 times starting 3 weeks before bringing plants inside. How do you make that?

Do impatients have seeds? Can you snip off a stem and root it that way?

See what happens when you read about more things!!!! I just get too many questions!

JJs, give the tree until spring. It may recover. The huge pine next door had been struck by lightning a half dozen times and survived each time. The last strike hit it square on and caused the trunk to split from the fork down about 3 or 4 feet...Neighbors decided enough was enough and took it out...it was still alive though.

Trina, her point was that if you want more blooms, you have to remove some of the old pods. You can always save pods from the new blooms, or like she said, leave 1 or 2 pods on and remove the rest.

Smiley, yep a Lost fan...but they better get their act together this season...way too repetitive and too much rehash in the past...we need action! Grin They usually release the previous season on DVD right before the new season starts to take advantage of the tv hype.

My "I can hardly wait" show is House with Hugh Laurie...have been a fan of his for years and this season will be from the Sanatarium/psychiatric hospital he checked into in last season's finale.

Trina, you really should look into the MasterGardener program in your area...you would enjoy the program and be able to help others with plant matters. I think you could get info on it through your county agent/cooperative extension service.

Samhain is my favorite holiday. You could put up a sign that says "Under-performing plants will be dealt with accordingly"
and "hang" your annuals under it...and rather than chase the treaters away by keeping them off the sidewalk, have your sign say "Keep off the flowers"

You would be surprised how many nurseries have under-trained or no training at all employees...they figure the info is on the tag (NOT) all they need is a warm body to water and keep things from being stolen..

Our backyard is really deep and dark so I'm going to get some posts of varying lengths and put a little plywood square on top, paint the whole thing black, then put them all over the yard to put jackolanterns on. That way they'll look like they are floating in the darkness. IF we can find a Justice of the Peace and IF I can get everything together by Halloween, we plan on getting married that day so let's hope for good weather. Fiance-man and I will dress up like Herman and Lily Munster. So, I need lots of ideas to decorate the backyard.

Boil Boil Toil and trouble
Cauldron burn and cauldron bubble...

So sorry Venice, I must have skipped a step. Glad Babee was here to catch it.

Hello babeegirl Pebbles...so glad the bees are returning...drought and disease are slowly destroying the population. Neighbor cut down an old and dying tree the other day, glad I was outside..it had a huge honey comb inside. He was getting ready to spray it. Asked him to take a break and give me 15 minutes before he did anything. Got the chainsaw and made cuts on either side of the hive and tied a rope around the trunk chunk...neighbor was so afraid he would get stung I couldn't get him to help move it...got the truck and used the hitch to drag the trunk over near our compost area and drug the chunk back behind the bins...bees were a touch testy, but no problem. Listened to DHJim fuss for ever it seemed like about "being a 58y/o woman dragging a 100 pounds of tree stump...yadayadayada" Thirty minutes later he was out peeking in on them, quite tickled to have them. MEN...ppppbbbbttt!

Venice, I don't think I can get a camera in position to take a picture. The opening is only about 4 or 5 inches and is almost against the back of the bin, just a couple inches of clearance. Did that to keep the oppossum and raccoons out of the hive. Had a hive chunk a few years ago and left it open so we could check on it. Darn critters got into it and mangled the comb and the bees. a month or so later one of the oppossums made a nest in it and had a litter of kits...not what you want in backyard suburbia...grin

I am here. Got six irons in the fire and trying not to get burned...grin. Your question Trina?

Your answer Venice, The comb appears to fill a cavity that is almost the depth of the trunk's width and about a foot and a half tall. I cut the chunk about three feet long, and the ends are solid so I got all of it. My arm span, from finger tip to finger tip is about 68 inches, and I could not quite encircle the trunk, so I would say approximately1.5 ft by 2.5 ft at a guess. It is an old active hive and has probably been around for a few years.

I tried to take a photo of the top. Afternoon sun is not good for photos here. Morning before the sun is best.

Need more details on the succulent. Can you show a close-up? Any flowers?
Maybe a Sedum or Senecio.

The Hawai'i that tourists see, and what's on TV is not well representative of Hawai'i. We are on a desert latitude; the rainforests happen because the mountains are so high that they trap clouds.

What was that remark about guys not wanting to do anything?

babeegirl cute story isn't it fun to be grandma! I have a cute story. My daughter from out of state came to spend Christmas with me a few years back and brought the three boys toys to put under the tree Christmas Eve after all were tucked in. The oldest whom was around 6 at the time woke me standing by my bed around 5:30am with eyes as big as saucers and said "Mamaw, Santa was here and left the whole bag" I cracked up.

well I always called it milkweed because loved chewing on it for the sweet milky taste but sure that is not the name. I found popping out weeds with a spade or hoe is the best sure fire way of them not coming back. If you have a lot of them your yard may look like it has the mange until good grass fills in the spots where weeds were.

Karen, they may not have been heavy duty enough to handle what she was cutting, but if you aren't confident that they will perform well then take them back and look for a good quality ergonomic pair of loppers. They are made to be user friendly and styled to be comfortable to handle. Nothing is worse than being in the middle of a job and having the battery run down. Grin
For the ornamental grasses here we use a cutting head for the weed eater. It is two plastic encased metal bars with a very sharp edge, that fit onto your weed eater. It is safer for cutting the grasses than a chain saw because you don't have to bend down over the saw to cut. When you go to return your shears bring the name, make and model number of your weed eater with you so the sales clerk can help you find the right ones to fit it.

Also, it would not be a bad idea at some point to get a small 8 or 10 inch chain saw to have on hand for the larger heavier cutting jobs. Anything bigger and you should have some help.

If you are comfortable using the chain saw, by all means it would be the easiest of all to use. These days they are lighter and easier to handle. I apologize for not remembering your health problems...just remember when you use the chain saw it is a good idea to wear one of the filter masks as they throw out a lot of small particulate and that would not do your breathing any good.

Hitching pants: I don't do much hitching. When I wear dress clothes, I were my suspenders. All my dress pants are two big since I got slim and pretty. I'd have to hitch them up from around my ankles. Congregations tend to frown on their pastor wearing there pants around the ankles. At home working I wear shorts. Got the prettest legs of any man around. Wife won't let me wear them in public. It embarrasses her when the women whistle at me. My legs and my colone are just to much for any woman to take at one time.

Getting fresh: At my age, someone getting fresh with you is a treat.

Dave, I enjoyed the views. Very pretty.

So far the ad hasn't popped up this evening. My tech friend said that it was probably contained the malware that tried to sneak in on my computer last night. The sirens went off right after I had clicked on the add to see if there was some way to get it off. Thank goodness for Avast. He also told me to go to malwarebytes.com and download that to my computer. Said it was one of the best around right now.

I'm to busy with my huggin to do any boot kicking or ah shuchs in. Go to what is fun. At my age, get your kicks when you can, while you can. That's my motto. Course it helps that I am a world class hugger.

JJs, The zipper and the bag balm broke me up. That ain't no fun but it sure is funny. Reminds me of the time Dad had to go in for a ream job after postrate surgery. Throughed a fit to come home, so finally the doctor gave up and let him come home with a catherter bag. Whole slew of folks at their house that Sunday, Dad decided he had to do #2. Momma jumped up and got his bag for him and went with him to pottay. Just as they started out the bathroom to come to the living room, someone knocked on the door. There were ten or twelve people who could have answered the door, but Mom took off like a house a fire, "I got it," she hollored. Momma took off lickedy split. She forgot all about have that bag in her hand and Dad attached to the other end. Dad had his hands back, upon his tiptoes, trying to keep up with Mom and hollering to the top of his lungs, "Ohhh." Mom never slacked up. All we could do was laugh. Had to see it to appreciate it.

Great visual Jim. An absolute fitting way to end a day...on a laugh. Time to shower and wash the weed funk off and call it a good fight fought...grin Best regards to Jo and you, have a sweet evening and a better morning.

Good night all. Busy day tomorrow. Each of you be safe ...

Oh ya, I saw your new thread post, searched of it and went "waaaaaa?" Are we one talkative bunch or what?
Now by keen observations are you being sarcastic????

It's a fabulous day in AK like summer again. Had to go dig around outside (aka weed the yard) so I had an excuse to be out there.

AAAAAH! So funny, both of my parents bday's are March 10th, one year apart. No wonder I like her!

So I'm doing great, should know better than to not check everyday! :) What's up with you?

Not a bit of sarcasm at all...you make me laugh with your take on some things and THAT is a good thing Martha...

Spent as much time as I could outside...nice the green house has power so can drag the laptop out with me.GRIN

Been fighting evil taproot weeds all day. cussed so much I am hoarse. Dave is teaching us a few Hawai'ian phrases like good morning Aloha kakahaika and good night Aloha ahia hi and my favorite, until we meet again a hui hou. Kassy has a whole 40 thread, Dave calling Dave...got some absolutely beautiful miniature conifers growing out there...real baby babies. Grin.

Chezca checked in and the slug thread is perking along again. This site was really wonky yesterday, bouncing things around and sending you off to weird places...like that is new...grin. Kassy cooked a puff ball, ate half of it and lived to tell the story...grin

How is the palm adjusting to the kitty? Or maybe how is the kitty adjusting to the palm?

That's about all the news from Lake Woebeme...grin

Oddly the cat has lost interest in the palm. Go figure. Am I lucky girl or what?! I saw Kassy's puff ball mushroom. Can't imagine trying to eat half of that. I like mushrooms but man! Sounds like it must be along the lines of a portabella. Which reminds me, I was gonna flip her grief over never having tried one. Sheesh! Gotta bring that girl into the light age!

You're funny. Tap roots...ugh! Has Dave taught you how to swear in Hawaiian yet? Now THAT's what you need! How to not offend your non-hawaiian neighbors.

Well it just goes to show you how things go on the plant ID thread that the sluggies are still going. Good for them. :)
As I said to Kassy...bah humbug someone had their panties in a bunch. Ah well. I like the thread jumping, it's fun. I love the latest titles.

Keeps us honest and on our toes...of course, today the site was still acting a bit strange...ate one of Lynnie's posts after I read it. We looked around for it, but it was gone...that Malakai corn Stalker is starting to get frisky...grin

Sitting here drinking and Irish decaf wondering how I managed to get this sedate...lol Got 3 cats all trying to occupy the same spot on the bench with me and keep thinking they need some Irish milk...grin

Oddly enough, I do not believe there are any swear words in Hawai'ian...may be wrong, but think they got all their swear words from the pirates and missionaries...lol

I just figured the plantID thread is probably the busiest on the whole site and we were impeding progress...which just goes to show you they didn't read it...grin.

Have to come up with a new title soon. this one grew legs and took off...

Hi Jim! Missed the ads on DG info. I don't seem to get them. Am I just lucky? Hmmmm...

What? No swear words in Hawaiian? How bout da hui? LOL...just kidding Dave. Didn't people got killed for standing in the kings shadow? I'll bet they had a word or two. Of course pirates and missionaries might expand your vocabulary a bit.

Yes, good thought on the plant ID thread, not sure I'm buying it, but a positive outlook soooo beats the alternative :)

Hawaiian swear words?

Pilau, meaning "bad smelling", such as in: "Pilau da bugga" (Not a good person)

Hauna, meaning "smells like dead fish", such as in "Hauna braddah" (You need a bath).

Kaka, meaning "excretion", such as in "Kaka you" (You're crap).

Guess that more could be dug up, but best to leave the dirt buried!

The beginner gardening forum is really intended for beginner gardening questions.

Chat-type threads in a forum like this can seem a little intimidating to newbies, or someone who isn't part of the group.

That's why we have forums just for the chat-type threads - they aren't overshadowing the intended purpose of any other forum, and everyone pretty much expects to find serial-type threads in there ;o)
