I continued with my tomato seed saving this morning. Of course in the quiet of the morning my thoughts come freely; whether it pertains to the weather, gardening, or growers who have shared a certain tomato variety with me. I think of Big Red often. He convinced me that growing in a bale of hay really worked. He shared his special seed with me sending me his Lennie’s Oxheart and Indiana Red two weeks before he died February 2008. Well I was especially proud to save seed from his Linnie’s Oxheart today. It weighed in at two pounds and two oz.. Such a big tomato and such few seed because of the meatiness. We are indebted to many, such as our friend, who have preserved seed/plant materials because they cared!
I truly miss Red but have wonderful memories from the first time we met knowing he was a “gift” from God and it was meant to be! I treasured the friendship I had with him. His voice is now silent but his words remain with us; strong and steady words of love, concern and friendship.
In our sorrow, let us celebrate his life and be thankful he touched our lives in so many ways!
