hello rie...i'm Trina, glad to meet you...I like any plant that doesn't bite me back, I have 5 teenagers (4 are his, well 3 are his ones his ex's but she left him too) I call him my hubby but we aren't married yet. Yes he's asked, but I just stick my fingers in my ears and go lalalalala everytime he mentions it. We have a big dog in the back we call skipper and a chihuahua named Tinkerbell, but I call her a blood-thirsty chupacabra.

Well hello! Another gypsy member. Gotta get moon over to name you.
You like naming people right moon?
I hope she does :)

So I've been divorced almost 3 years. Can't say I'm sad about that. I agree with Trina, living together is juuuuust fine. Who needs messy paperwork?
Son just turned 19 & moved in with his dad last year to avoid the cold in AK.
I have a dog and the currently vanished cat from below (o.k. I'm really perturbed at him right now) and some fishy. I too love plants that don't bite, animals, and some people (LOL)

Hello Rie, I am Jean, everyone calls me Moon. I have 3 grown children, 32,34,36, and a 15y/o grandson who lives with my husband, Jim and I. I started helping my great aunt India in her garden when I was 2. Got away from it for a few years and then started back with a few houseplant in my early 20's. Turned into a 100 or so and sat on every flat surface with a hint of light. DHJim enclosed our backporch for me to greenhouse them when they got too big to be inside. Lost them all to a freak freeze when I was in my early 30's. Didn't have much to do with plants and gardening until about 10 or 11 years ago. Now I have to say "Hello, my name is Jean and I am a garden/plant addict" Grin

Hah! I found you all! I am Julie, AKA Smileymom, AKA RockN'Smile.

I live in Buffalo, NY with my artist husband and 2 kids. OK, well one kid is left at home. She is 16 and my son who moved out is 19. I've been gardening for about 10 years since we moved into a house that had a tiger lily jungle in the back yard. We uncovered a rose bush, my husband accidentally cut it down so I went out and bought a rose bush. Then it was curtains for me.

I have a lot of potted plants, he likes to dig garden beds and let me try to fill them up. I have a junkyard garden, little of this, little of that. I also work 40 hours a week, which leaves little time to garden.

Which reminds me... better go check on things...

Where are my manners??? Hello Rie! Hello Lainy!

I'm Sharon. Empty nester. Still haven't figured out how my daughter (lovely only child) could be approaching 30 in a few months. Widowed twice so "on hold" in that dept for a while. Animal lover. Right now I only have 2 cats but have had dogs and horses through the years.

Downsized 5 years ago and have a yard with sunny spots for the first time in decades. Immensely enjoying building all of the gardens. I have two young nephews, 3 and 5, that are my trusty assistants in the garden. Just lost my overseer this week, a 13 year old black lab. I miss her a lot but it was definitely her time. Probably snacking on doggy heaven's echinaceas and napping in day lilies, like she did here. :)

I haven't met a plant yet that I didn't like. Impossible for me to throw away babies when thinning plants. I have to get someone else to do it if I can't find them homes.

So nice to read a bit about everyone else. You are 'family' in a way so thanks for taking the time to write a bit. I enjoyed reading it. :)

I hope you find homes for them, trina. I saw your pic of the "casts of thousands." Well, one thousand anyhow. I would volunteer to help but due to allergies, my plants need to live outside. :( It's not the plants or the flowers so much as the microscopic things that live in the fertile dirt that do me in. It looked like most were of the sort that needed indoor wintering. However, if you have any thing in the "outside all year" category, I can help with those. Would cover packing and postage for you... Let me know by Dmail if I can help.

i wish my brugie was as good looking as yours trina. mine looks so pitafull. i have it in the ground and plan to leave it there. too big of a tuber to dig up. but only about 2 ft tall.

hubby is putting plastic on greenhouse while home for me. he is stationed out of town but got to come home for 4 days the holiday. will leave out tuesday morning. then you all will have a weepy rie to comfort.

i cant throw baby plants away either. i am over run with 4 o clocks but keep moving them. found a new bed for them since they can have it. was trying to make a raised bed out of a certain place but found out recently poison oak lives there and i am highly allegic. well cant be near it so figure will throw seeds in there and let them have the spot.

the bees are buzzing up a storm today i noticed. dont want winter yet. sheesh not ready for it.

SORRY for your loss of a bet furry friend. i know the feeling and it never lessens . i have several and one old one it will kill me when he goes. had him almost 14 years now. crying for you.

(((Hugs imzadi))) and thanks. She was a very sweet and good dog. Never did a mean thing to another living being in her entire life. She led a happy full life. There was a sudden rupture internally and we were at the vet within an hour so even that last day was mostly enjoyment for her. Best of luck with your crew. Enjoy your older one in his golden years. The ultimate responsibility of pet ownership (doing the right thing at the right time) sucks but it's small compared to the rest of the time spent with these dear ones.

Hi Sharon! Sorry to hear about the loss of your buddy. When my beloved cockapoo Phoebe died, oh so long ago, she came to me in a dream and told me she was frolicking with all the other dogs in the meadows. Then she licked my face. Smiley -- Did you say you have a jungle of tiger lilies? Are they real tiger lilies? I would love love love to have a tiger lily. I have never seen them in any store around here.

I remember as a kid and coming home from school and seeing that plant by the front door. I just couldn't resist knocking off the seeds! I have a computer photo of one in my bathroom. Nice memory.

My garden is tiny tiny and I can't think of anything that would be a good item to trade. I have some seeds of many ordinary flowers if you are interested. Let me know! Thanks.

This year
lamb’s ear
blue ageratum
short marigolds, many yellow, a little darker yellow, orange
moss roses, orange, multi-color
blue ageratum
coneflower, pink

Last year
Rudbeckia triloba
Tall multi-color zinnias, 3’ tall

Maybe

blackie sweet potato vine (root in fall)
daylily seed pod – do I need to put one of those bags over it?
Clematis – seed pod is still a little green
pink fountain gaura – working on them, hard to find

thats because you need to keep the root part shaded...

I was all proud of myself, cause I got everything dug out of my garden I was supposed too, the brug, all 9 spider plants...sat down to eat something...looked over at the dining room table at my pretty purple shamrock

and went %%^^^ I forgot the other shamrocks...and who knew those things multiplied so fast...I only planted 12 and now have close to 75 shamrock bulbs

and just when I thought I was winning the battle!!!

Had to go look at clematis. It is starting to get new leaves on it and ready to bloom again.

But reason I looked was for seed pods. Are they the little fuzzy things with a little white thing at the end?

clematis seeds i know of on my look like the ones posted above. but as they go on to take flight they get fuzzier and poofy so they can blow on the wind.

this little guy has thinned out to get ready for a blowing wind

http://www.usefilm.com/images/4/5/4/0/4540/1162467-medium.jp...

most of the time though winter doesnt give them enough time to get there. like my venices pictures are accurate of the seed head and pod zone is too short for them to take flight. they end up riping on the plant and going no where. maybe why i dont have strays.

either way the seed is at the end of the thing. Venices pics are accurate of seed heads and seeds. the seeds are at the end of the fuzzy things.

This is the information I found. The fluffies blow away and they the seed pod develops with brown seeds inside.

Any seed you collect needs to be 'viable', that is it has the potential to germinate. Generally viable seed will be visible in the seedhead, this is particularly true of species. If you can't see any seeds, however small, then probably none have set and so there is nothing to germinate.

With some varieties you'll find only a few of the seeds in the seedhead are viable and so you'll only be able to see a few seeds. But for all varieties, wait until the seeds go brown before you collect them as this is the most common indication they've ripened and dried and can be safely stored.

ok! At first they produce the more white fluffy things with a white dot on the end. Then that spiral thing grows and later the seeds turn brown. That is what was confusing me.

Your fluffy things ARE attached to a seed I think. Did they come from one of those spiral seed pods? Anyway, the seeds I have are larger but I guess that doesn't matter.

You have seeds and I have seeds!!!!

Hey there y'all. saw this thread and it looked like fun!

we downsized/moved to north Raleigh (about 15 miles) five years ago to be nearer my elderly parents. I try to garden... at this time no one seeing the weeds and rows of unplanted dead plant pots would believe it. been under the weather for 1 year, the weeds went bezerk.

was married once before, two kids, 29 and 26. remarried to a Dear Husband (DH). dear daughter (DD) is a senior in high school. we're down to only 1 dog and 5 parakeets.

ican and trina - know what you meant, it was hard to give up freedom to re-hitch. Had a blast being single; DH had a heck of a time talking me into this. nothing like the first time at all. Anchorage is so beautiful. Didn't realize it was SO BIG - we drove up into the hills and looked back. y'all have a great used book store there. that's DH's thing, reading.

underneath weeds out yonder is this beginnings of a hosta collection because our yard is sun-challenged. where sun, I've put about 500 varieties of irises (dying under weeds), and some puny rose bushes that don't like it here at all. oh well... everything else, I'm a novice at. but I hang out mostly in the Iris Forum, because I'm crazy about them.

Julie - we were there at Niagra Falls in mid August! had forgotten how beautiful upstate NY is.

Lainy, is Bedfordshire near Leeds? we've been to the castle at Leeds, too. gorgeous countryside. would love to chat with you. there are some wonderful iris hybridizers in UK. Bartlett is one of my favorites.

nice thing about SC and NC - mid state it's about the same distance from the Appalachian Mts. to the coast, not a far drive either way.

I have a columbine in the front bed. it reseeds itself. everytime I look for the seeds, the pods are empty! but get many volunteer babies the next year. it's fun to give those away.

two years ago I crossed some irises and made seeds, but bugs really like them, had fat larvae in all but six. found out on here, they needed to be sprayed once pods set. still 6 of 30 were free of bugs. no results yet. can't wait to see what comes out. irises do not breed true to the parent in the seed = new genetic mix.

a yeah, actually, it can be too wet. depends on the iris. beardless (water/bog based heritage) ones are used for riverback erosion. the Bearded irises (desert based heritage) will rot with too much water. they require excellent drainage.

but wet won't cause no bloom - it causes stinky rot and dead plants.

I will let them chill until I am ready to start the seeds indoors in Febuary.
if anyone would like crossed daylily seeds send me a Dg mail.

Venice, you made a smiley face with your seeds!

Bonjon - some clematis are finicky. I have a Miss Bateman that's tough, but an easier one would be jackmanii. I'll post one of mine in all it's glory. After it was done, I cut the bejezzus out of it. Got a little bit of a second bloom going on now.

Here's my daughter's smiley face when we were at Vinny T's in Boston:

Hi Skimer and Pajonica. Welcome. I just came up for a minute. I get my mom on Saturdays. She's in her 80's. I make her do a little gardening and then we watch movies for a bit.

Here's my jackmanii clematis in it's glory:

trina- gee, the two biggest beardless growers I know of are in Kalamazoo MI, near Utica NY, and several hybridizers in Ontario - that's north of you, isn't it? siberian irises make great bank holders. they get really dense and thick.

Lynnie, you are in zone 5b. Suttons (google it) has a great chart online of the reblooming reliabilities by zone. RIS (reblooming iris society) also has info. if you get frost before the iris has time to rebloom, it won't.

just think of it, though, I have to fight to get peonies to bloom, and forget having a fragrant lilac here! not enough cold weather.

((((((trina))))))) shhhhh - they are all on line! your local nursery won't know a sib from a species. take my word for it. ensata.com snowpeakiris.com (she's irisloverdee on here) and pollyk on DG, send her dmail and ask her. you can order now for spring planting... shhhhhh and I'm envious. between tree canopy and allergies, no house plants here.

DH started the george forman and has hotdogs and pork and beans started - we're eating light tonight. this time I trained...or he decided...to get this right. he's a finicky eater, so he does most of cooking.

not unusual Moon. Ceasars Brother is one of those irises that's so popular, unless you buy it from an iris specialist, chances are it's not really Ceasar's brother. that happens to the most popular irises. if you buy an iris in wallyworld, homedepot or other big box store, chances are over 80% it's not the right iris. read my thread on the iris forum about "when asking for an iris ID".

Hi all, I'm Jim. I am the old man of the bunch. I just stick around to agravate the girls. Someone has to keep them under control or they get rowdy. I don't like dogs, they dig. Can't stand cats, they rub up against you and make tracks on the car. Don't know anything about the names of flowers. I like anything that blooms and comes back, except morning glories, trumpet vines and purslane. Had to hoe to much of that out of cotton when I was a kid. I am a fanatic about my yard. Love raised bed gardening. Like to eat anything not good for me. Peanut butter goes with anything. I have a pot belly and extremely pretty legs. I like to spin a good story every once and a while. I am solomn and sad, full of life and a lot of fun. My mind is 38 years younger than my body. That's Jim41. The 41 is my model number.

Venice, there's a Miss Bateman clem in between 2 jackmanii, and some pinks (my favorite) and some different lilies. I have some huge seed pods from a regale lily if anyone wants them.

JJs - I don't know too much about clematis, but if your fence was mine, I'd give them the willy nilly chop. Right above the first break, whatever you call it technically. Make it force new shoots from the bottom. Of course, that could be totally the wrong advise.

I forgot who mentioned the smiley on the spoon, but that wat totally unplanned. Being EYE-tailian, we use spoons with our spaghetti. I've been a smiley collector since the 70's. Had a smiley bathroom, but finally painted it. All the kid's friends were "bummed".

Start spreading the plants, out a bit more
I want to pot them up - new plants, new plants!
These vagabond plants, have made it a chore
Right through the very heart of me - new plants, new plants!

I wanna wake up in a house, that really does sleep
And find I’m queen of the plants - top of the heap

These little witchy blues, are melting away
I’ll make a brand new start of it – with new plants
If they can make it here, they’ll make it anywhere
It’s up to you – new plants! new plants!

Morning All!

We had a huge dead tree in front of our house. I hated it, DH said "you'd miss it if it was gone. It provides shade to the house, yadda... yadda". I said "no, ugly dead tree." Then the Forestry Dept came and determined it was dead, and cut it down. Turned out the inside was a shell, and there was a squirrel nest inside.

That was a couple years ago, during the summer. In October we had what they call "The October Storm" and the darned thing would have fallen on the house if it was still around.

So, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, Pajonica.

Smiley, did you see Dave's sketches? Before I enlarged them, I thought you would think it was an un-smiley face! lol

Dave, amazing photos. It looks like the trees and bushes there are so knarly and have so much character.

Trina, is that purple bike your broom?

I just don't know on which thread to post now!

Lynnie, very cute little puppy.

Nice mushroomms, can't get enough of them!

I must say, those 2 trees were really cool. The one that was growing across the cliff with trees growin gup from it and the one that looks like an octopus hugging that huge rock! Amazing how they were growing.

lol yup, lots of farms in MA! dairy, tobacco, and uh..plants veggies I guess. Mostly small family farms. We need to get our pumpkins for halloween you know! I could use a bunch of pines *grin* how about 15 so I can line the back perimeter. There was not a single tree in this yard when we bought this house, not one! I think I planted 23 so far (lost a couple) and they're young.

I think we are going to have a dry day today! And tomorrow too. Anyone got big plans for the holiday?
