Has anyone set up an mp3 player lately? Am trying to help a teen friend fix his. He got it over a year ago, could not get it to work, so put it away in the closet. Now he wants to use it.

I have charged it up for more than six hours, but it will not hold a charge. Music has been installed. It will only play when it is attached to the computer. And that kind of defeats the purpose of a portable device, huh? Any suggestions, please?

If it won't hold a charge then it needs a new battery--and maybe that's why it only plays when it's connected to the computer because it can draw power from the computer when it's attached, and if it can't hold a charge then it may not have enough juice to do anything when it's not attached to the computer's power.

There's always a chance he may have a defective player--maybe you could tell us a bit more about how he "couldn't get it to work" a year ago. MP3 players aren't generally that complicated so if he couldn't get it to work back then, then it could be that the player is no good and needs to be replaced. Unfortunately it'll probably be harder to return it for a refund/replacement now since so much time has gone by since it was purchased.

It might also help to know what brand of player it is--if the music playing issue isn't linked to the bad battery then it would probably help for people to know what type of player it is.

thanks, ecrane! I was hoping somone knew something about these. It is a SPI video mp3 player, retail $119.99. I have visited http://www.techsupportspi.com. There is a link there for help, but noone answered my emails...that was two weeks ago.

He is a tad slower than most of us, and I figured he just got frustrated with it, and I offered to help. He is a good boy (21) and in college. He does not ask his grandmother, who raised him ,for anything. He wanted it for listening to while he rides the bus to school. And I wanted to help and support him. He tried charging it and placing music in it at that time. But, it just would not play with out the computer.

Thanks to you, I now accept that the battery is faulty. I will see if I can get him another one.
