after a couple of weeks of being cooped up, cabin fever got the best of me today. I packed up my sniffly teenage daughter and we hit some of our local junk shops. After seeing the pics of all the beautiful totems, I was on a mission to grab some glass. We struck out at the S&A Boutique (the Goodwill and Salvation Army prices are soaring!) and headed for the TRUE junk shop. the guy was super nice and told me just to pile up whatever i wanted! Woo hoo! Fifteen bucks later, my backseat was beautiful with treasure. (not just glass either, got some awesome 1950 and 1960's metal daisy brooches). Gonna post some pics of some of my loot.
As i was leaving, he told me that a friend of his recently purchased a large piece of property that once was a really old landfill!!!! He's heading there tomorrow to pick up some bottles, glass, etc. All I have to do is let him know what I like and he'll hook me up for cheap!!! Keep those pics and ideas coming!! My kids and my two nieces want to make T2T gifts for the gparents, etc this year; I'm gonna need ya'lls input and inspiration.
Since this has become a novella, I'll hush up now. Just HAVE to share a sign I saw today first.
"There are two rules in life
you can never twist or bend.
Never whittle towards yourself
and never tinkle into the wind." TOO CUTE and TOO TRUE
Would I have loved to have gone shopping with you and daughter. Going to junk stores is very high on my priority list.
The pic you posted has some awesome glass. Is that a glass angel I see too? You are going to have some beautiful totems. What a great idea the kids have for making Christmas presents. With the economy in such bad shape we have to use our imaginations and make our own gifts. I hope a lot of the girls come on this thread and post some of their great ideas.
Did you see the thread that showed "flowers" made out of plates? I've been to the thrift store and have my collections started for making them.
P.S. I would love to help that man dig in his landfill property. Doesn't take much to make me happy.
lol you know, that guy is so nice that he'd probably take us along. he makes his living buying out old houses, the "leftovers" at rummage sales, purchasing items in unpaid rental storage units, and carting off scrap, etc. His wife walked out on him and his children; he works like this to allow maximum time with his kids. He told me that he usually can get one or two really good items each "job" and that is the money maker. All the large appliances and clothing pieces are donated to burned out families and a local mission. The "JUNK" house gets filled with all the odd and ends to sell. He won't ever be rich, but he has all the respect in the world from me...
Even before the economy went sour (we are are single income, four kids and an ex wife to support, praying the oilfield doesn't bottom out -family ha), my kids and I were always doing something. We have to be DOING something creative or go crazy. I just figured we'd put it to good use this year.
Yes, maam, that's an angel. She's super heavy and I hope to put her on the top of the clear crystal totem that Jana (DD) has in mind for our pastor's wife. I'll keep posting pics of my treasures- hoping my fellow DGers will shoot ideas our way. I saw the pics of the plate flowers too. DS and I are about to throw a few things together so we have kind of an idea what to keep our eyes open for tomorrow. Thanks everybody. You don't know how many days of enjoyment I've gotten from looking at all these wonderful creations. -juanita-
I'm waiting too! So love all the totems I find on DG. I made one I call my glass lady and never did try another one, have all the material for them too. Have to get busy...
