HI,

I am in New York and it is time to start planning to bring all of "kids" back inside for the winter.

Now my problem... Last year I also brought in a host of insects along with the kids; from ants to @#%$#!#%s.

Any suggestions as to how to evict all of these unwanted passengers???

Thanx

I use Bayer Rose and flower spray. I also water with one quarter of a "mosquito dunk" in my watering can to kill any gnat larva in the soil. I use sticky traps inside to get the adults.

I was just going to ask the same question , last year I send alot of money on the bayer pills you put in the soil nothing. I live in DE. and gnats are so bad here I can't get them out of my soil. I was told to put playsand in all my plants 1in to 2ins for a month. well some got over water because I kept to the same watering I always did they got Root rot. The ones that lived seem fine for awhile . Plus its so much work.
Now what is this Mosguito dunk. I'll google it but would like to hear from someone who used it .
Thank you so much

It's a round doughnut like disc which contains BT which is used to kill mosquito larva.
People use them in standing water areas to keep mosquito population down. I use them in water trays for my carnivorous plants and rainwater barrels.

I read here last year about someone who soaks her orchids in Sevin before bringing them inside. I thought that was brilliant and as I'm infested, well not me but my plants, with spider mights every winter.
I tried soaking via excessive spraying every plant in sevin a few times over a few days.

Last year was the best year I've had with less bugs. I also am tending to put the bug problem ones in the basement dormant and the less buggy types in the house.

I have used bayer systemic in my pots ( intended for roses) but I've still had the occasional worm etc survive all winter ( 7 months!) in a pot.I guess that is because they don't eat the plant so they don't die from the poison. Worms are ok anyway.

Pest free plants for me include orange green plant (chlorophytum) , scented geranium, and oxalis ( I like purple) and giant bird of paradise, a pink flowered type of iceplant, string of hearts and string of pearls. Dont have the link memorized but I have a houseplant album in my photobucket album- look for cheerpeople there.

There's some helpful info here- think I'll add it to my blog here.
