Several of the Dave's Garden NE Florida Gardening Brigade are planning to attend. This message is posted here for members of DG that are not subscribers that can only view the first post in a thread, and for others outside of the NE Florida area that may not be following our local discussion thread.
The UNF Hort Group meetings often conclude with a raffle drawing/plant swap. You are welcome to bring a plant to add to the raffle give away, but it is not required.
We might be able to coordinate a group lunch in some nearby restaurant after the garden tour concludes.
The tour is hosted by the UNF Horticulture Group that generally meets the third Saturday of each month for a presentation/group discussion or field trip such as this one. You will be able to sign up for monthly updates on the UNF Hort Group meetings, if you want to receive a monthly email notice. The UNF Hort Group is free and open to the public and is geared toward all gardening skill levels, novice to advanced.
This month, the UNF Hort Group will meet at Matt and Joann Encinosa’s house for a tour of their garden. The group has met there several times in the past. Any serious gardener who has not seen this garden should make a point of visiting. Matt’s main interests are bromeliads and palms. He has about eighty species of palms and dozens of species and hybrids of bromeliads. Some of the bromeliad hybrids are Matt’s own. In addition, you will see a wide assortment of fruit trees, gingers, and a great variety flowering plants. If you pay attention, you will even see a little bit of St. Augustine grass.** This is a mature garden of a couple of acres with a lot of tall trees and large specimen plants.
footnote: **(They are apparently gardeners of my own ilk that think lawn grass is an invasive exotic weed and that want every square inch of soil to be planted with something more interesting than lawn grass. LOL)
If you want to use an on-line map like Mapquest or Googlemaps or use a GPS device, the address is 571 Fruit Cove Road, FL 32259-2859 (this address on Fruit Cove Road is south of Popolee Rd and north of Wards PL.) Fruit Cove Road runs off of San Jose Boulevard (SR-13) in the south of the Jacksonville area. On I-295, the San Jose/SR-13 exit is Exit 5B. The Encinosa garden is on the east side of Fruit Cove Road, but the mail box with the street address is directly across on the west side of Fruit Cove Road.
Reply here or send me a D-mail if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing all DG members, family and friends that may want to attend the garden tour.
