After waiting what seemed like forever for my seven container-grown tomato plants to produce ripe tomatoes, I was 'rewarded' with a scourge of bugs, worms, slugs (never before have I seen SLUGS on my tomatoes!), birds and chipmunks ruining them faster than I could keep up with them all.
Yesterday, all the frustration and heartbreak led me to a decision: my sanity, or the tomato plants.
So I chopped them all down, emptied the containers, washed and stored them for the season. I saved a large box of tomatoes in various stages of ripening/shades of green, with which I plan to make the roasted tomato sauce recipe I found here at DG last year.
Energized by this burden being lifted, I was inspired to clear the motley assortment of dirty plastic pots I have been saving for years (because you never know when you might need one!) out of the Rubbermaid storage shed, sorted through and saved only the best ones, hosed down the shed inside and out and cleaned out all the pots I'm keeping.
My patio looks bigger without all the monster plants. I can put all four chairs around the patio table again. Tonight after work, I'll enjoy a glass of wine out there as I look for other stuff to chop down. That basil is looking pretty scruffy...its days are numbered.
Watch out, garden: the Terminator has been unleashed. ;)
