I've used RealVNC for years to access all of the machines on my home network, and other machines across the net. It's Free.

VNC (there are many flavors) is good and it's free too. Remote Desktop (part of Windows) is what I use to remote control a computer on a LAN (home or work) most of the time but there are some programs that won't interact with the desktop or don't behave properly (use VNC in this case).

For work I have to first get a secure connection using Nortel Contivity VPN - this makes my laptop appear that it is connected on the LAN at the building downtown. Now I can remote control computers that I have access to, using either of the two above programs.
