The Tomato in America: Early History, Culture, and Cookery by Andrew F. Smith.
So I ordered a copy.
I'm sure others have mentioned this book, but I was completely fascinated by the information it offered.
I didn't know, for instance, that the practice of picking tomatoes green (in the South) and shipping them to market (in the North) considerably predates the Civil War by as much as a generation.
And I was much amazed and entertained reading of the patent medicines made from tomatoes in the 1830s and 40s, and the (often outlandish) health claims made for them.
What fun!
