I got my first look at the type of tree peonies that Adelmans are providing. They appear totally different. They are being sold as own root plants. Not certain how they are growing them but appear that the part that was shipped had been completely under the soil. The reason I say part shipped is that almost all of the top growth has been removed, some just has a stub of a stem remaining. They are all root, with very nice stem buds emerging from the roots. What does remain looks like an herbaceous root. Some could have a problem deciding what end should be up. But if you carefully remove the packing material you can see where cuts have been made. The cuts should be planted up. On several of the roots you can see where the stem shoots come from the underside of the root. This verifies that the roots have both stem and root tissue.
At first glance it is a very interesting developement. The roots are all healthy but if the buds get knocked off how soon would new buds develop? Removing most of the stems reduce shipping cost but increase handling cost. I was not going to purchase but I think if any remain after the sale I will take a chance.
I hope anyone that comes to the HPS sale will take a close look and report your thoughts.
