Help selecting hive size please

Monticello, KY(Zone 6b)

Could someone tell me what size hive we should build for just one family for honey harvest? I'm new to bees other than planting flowers for them. Husband knows about them but is looking for a hive plan to build his own hive.

There are two types of hives your standard 10 frame and the 8 frame hive. http://www.beesource.com/build-it-yourself/ has the plan to build a hive. Instead of building I would just buy a starter kit that way you get every thing you need to keep the hive.

Thank you for the link. He's considering buying a hive complete with bees and equipment from somewhere close by but wanted to know how to build one in case the deal didn't work out.

You should consider a top bar hive, also known as a garden hive. They are small, easily managed, and provide plenty of honey for a family. I have seen several for sale on the internet or you can build one yourself.

Thanks for the info on the top hive. My biggest problem seems to be getting DH to build one or two. Maybe while he's unable to do anything this weekend I can get him going on at least one.
