Can anyone tell me how to fix a rust problem on my NEW metal garden cart. After I'd used it a few times the paint blistered and started peeling off in large strips. Now rust has started on the metal where the paint peeled. Is this the norm for new equipment now? I need to know if (and how) to strip and repaint so I don't have this problem anymore. What kind of paint, etc. Everyone who answers questions on this forum is so knowledgeable I decided to pick a few brains rather than relying on my own very limited knowledge. Thanks!
If not, try to clean all the paint off and start over. Wire brushto remove all loose rust and flakes, then Naval Jelly will stabalize the remaining rust. Once stabalized, use a primer and paint designed for metal - Rustolium has some great products, but so do some other mfgrs.
If you have a friend or insurance adjuster, maybe an auto repair shop might redo it very cost effectively.
K2, I too have a garden cart that sits out in the weather. The tongue got bent so used a wire brush and knocked off old paint and spray painted same color with rustoleum paint. Then filled with dirt and put in woodsy area and planted flowers in it until I can get some welding done on it. I wasn't too picky and like the rugged look, so if ya want an expert job then suggest complete stripping of paint. Mine looks pretty good tho.
Thanks to both of you. Bubba, I figured the extreme measures that you suggested would have to be done to stop it from rusting completely thru. It is very light weight metal to begin with, but I did think keeping it in the garage would discourage rust for a little while. Unfortunately, the warranty has expired. Thanks for the specifics on products to use. Really appreciate the info. Best regards to you both.
