The 12 Month Quilting Block Swap for 2009-10 has begun!
Each month will be a seperate thread so we can keep track of the blocks, colors and the results.

Remember, each participant will choose a pattern and colors for the blocks she wants for her month. Each month, except the one that is yours, you will make a quilt block (and one for yourself if you choose) in the pattern and colors designated by that months' individual. Send the block to me and I will send all 12 blocks to the person whose month it is. No embroidery since some don't have that machine option, but you can choose from a variety of patterns.

Block Specifics:

1. All fabric should be 100% cotton. Please wash all fabric before making
block.
Fabric is completely up the individual as long as it is 100% cotton.
2. Do not use any spray starch on blocks, spray sizing is OK.
3. Remove all selvages before cutting fabric for blocks
4. Block should be 12.5 x 12.5 when finished.
5. Make 1 block to send and 1 block for yourself (optional).
6. Cut off date for your mailing would be the end of the month i.e. the June
block would need to be mailed not later than June 30th.
7. Remember, after you make a quilt we would love to see your results!!

You will be signing up for the entire year, so even if you get your blocks in the early months, remember you need to stick with us for the entire year. Others are counting on you. If something happens and you will not be able to complete a month or the 12 months, please contact the hostess as soon as possible. I realize that everyone has a life outside of the swap, but please try to plan, so that things will go smoothly.

The following are participants in this swap, their colors and months they will receive their blocks.

Oct thread already... means I need to get working on some upcoming months.
I really need to straighten up my computer room/spare bedroom this weekend but I've been in sewing withdrawl for a week now so MUST play with some fabric 1st.

I'll also get pics of the Aug blocks and post them there. And I WILL get those Spring blocks together today and post somewhere.

Luckily it is chilly and rain is expected so I'll not be called out to work in my over grown yard. Guess I do need to clean a spot so I can start bringing some of the more tender indoor plants back indoors.

I MUST get my tote bag and towels done today so they can go in the mail this week. I went to see my Dad, am going away in Oct. and am talking with a number of breeders about a dog so I have been a busy bee. The sewing has been falling short.

The blocks I have received for Oct. have been wonderful and as soon as the camera comes back (this week should be) I will post pictures. I love the pattern; wasn't sure how it would look with the batiks but it is great!

Rainy weather today means sewing time!

I sent Sept and Oct blocks out yesterday (Monday). Sorry I was slow mailing Sept. I can only go to the po on Mondays now since I changed to my 10 1/2 hour shift plus Sats so I got Oct out early so you do not have to wait on me for that one.

I am a Phlebotomist ( I draw blood) . I work in an offsite I do 4 10 1/2 days and some Saturdays. It is a 40 hour week but I do it in 4 days. I was hoping if I went back to these hours I would get more quilting done but I am pooped when I get home. However, I do have Mondays to myself and I do get alot done that day. Gotta love the medical field though there are always spots to be filled.

The long arm is slow going it needs to be tuned up since it was moved it is soooo fussy. My plan this weekend is to get her oiled and some leaders on and then try to put some practice fabric on it. I am still trying to clean the room up so I can just focus on the longarm. Slow but sure. Cher

I am hoping to get a puppy later this month or early Nov. so I had to clean my ofc/sewing/craft/library room and make it puppy-proof. Did that yesterday and am happy with the outcome. Did the closet last weekend since it doesn't have a door. Will have to put a bi-fold on to keep puppy out of my shoes. This house just hasn't been the same without a dog for the past three months. Hope I'm ready for the puppy stage!

We have had rain for the past week and we go to Asheville on Tuesday and they will have...rain! I hope things are not as bad as the weather channel says but we shoudl have fun anyway.

Off to finish my sewing committments.

I finished my Nov and Dec blocks today. That's good because I think I am going to need lots of time to figure out paper piecing. I have never done it, so if anyone has any ingenious tricks/tips, I would love to hear them. If nothing else, please feel free to dmail me. Thanks!

Janice...I will probably wait a week or two to mail my blocks to see if I can get anymore done and then mail all at once, but I promise not to be late.

Well, I managed to complete one task this weekend. I got the longarm cleaned, oiled, leaders and did a practice quilt just a play rug for my kitties. I feel good about it but still have a little issue with tension. I am still getting small loops on the back. Although it is way better than it was I had bird nests all over. I think some of the loops are from me when I do curves too fast it seems that is when I get them the most. Oh well I think it was pretty good for not touching it in a year.

PPing is really fun gals you will love it. Some of those videos are really great do check them out. Thanks for finding them Linda.

My tote is mailed, my apron is done and I just finished a knitted hat and scarf set done in support of breast cancer hot pink. Now on to the memorial bird house and garden ornament swaps. It's been so long since I did crafts other than needlwork or sewing. I haven't painted anything in ages or worked with glue either for that matter. This should be interesting. And fun...

If you look inside the seams of any purchased clothing, you will see that the seams have been enclosed in stitching. That is a serged seam. Just makes things look professionally done, and it helps some seams from fraying so bad.

Marion, I love to use fabric napkins too!!! they feel better against your lips, that paper is...hmmm yuck ! and paper napkins and towels cost so much!!! not to mention all that trash into the landfills..yuck there too...

I don't have a serger, but still so easy to make a napkin, cut a big square, fold the edges in 1/4'' press, fold again, press, stitch...so easy...and any fabrics you like...

or double sided, two big squares, right sides facing, stitch around 3 1/2 sides, turn right sides out, tuck in edges where not sewn , top stitch all around...use one of those nifty fancy stitches...so way better than paper napkins !!!

Very "Thunder" looking!!!!
A couple other "tricks" for working with thiangles - use fabric sizing on the fabric before cutting. Will keep that bias edge from stretching.
And you can actually work with some squares by drawing a diagonal line down the center and lining up with that and then cutting on the diagonal. Hard to explain. But it prevents having that bias edge.
Also, although I don't like most of the "designer" tools out, F&P has a point trimmer that really helps in these situations. without that point that hangs over, you get an actual blunt edge that matches up right where you need it.

PS I turned the (propane) fireplace on this AM and switched the direction of the ceiling fan!!!!! So nice & toasty in here now. Heat Pumps are great in the summer but really suck in ccold weather.

thanks Kathy and Jean, kinda "busy" but I like it!!

I don't think the bias was my problem, they just kept coming out way to small...no matter how scant i did the seams...thats why i ended up going larger with the cuts...

Nice block! It looks great in red, white and blue.

This block looked easy until I tried making it. What a mess! No points - they are chopped off by the seam. Guess I forgot the lessons learned making flying geese. And, the longest row of triangles is way longer than any other part of the block so it sticks out beyond the large triangle and shorter row of triangles on either side of it. There is nothing square about this block. It's comical.

Any suggestions before I try it again? I thought I measured the cuts correctly but will double check on that. It must be something about how I'm sewing the 1/2 triangles together. If the second try doesn't work I'll have to get more fabric. Will get some help from the ladies at the quilt shop while there. Will take the first block to show them for entertainment. LOL!

Make the 2 half. square triangles. Cut all the triangles a good 1/4" bigger than what they tell you to make them. Add the triangles to the squares. Then add the bigger triangles on each end and square it all up to 12 1/2".

Measuse down the diagonal center of a 12 1/2" ruler and the center of the small triangles should be that measurement.

Remember, the reason for letting each person pick their own pattern is so we learn how to do different things; just think of this as a challenge
(says the lady who hasn't done it yet, heh, heh).

Janice how are you to know the instructions are quite off.. I think someone has mentioned in an earlier thread to cut the squares bigger.

I cut them 9" and 5" instead of 8 7/8 and 4 7/8. Try that Debra.
But pay attention to the placement directions for the smaller half squares.

You can always square them smaller but can never add on if they are too small is my philosophy.

I never cut to an 1/8" - I always round up then trim.

I have found I have to do that too, especially on quilterscache patterns. Has saved me many a problem in the end measurements.

Those look really nice, ladies! Some of the darker blues in the blocks show up almost black on my monitor... and ya know - that star block is really sharp in red and black! The block with the light colored fabric with the red/blue starts is a good one, kudo's to it's maker!!!!

I haven't given any thought to how I am going to put it together, but I am thinking of this as a gift quilt. I have several family members that would love a red, white, and blue quilt. But then again, I find it very hard to let go of them yet! These are stupendous blocks and they mean alot to me, I can't quite see myself giving it away!

Panic attack, went at lunch to the Quilt shop the next block down, trying to figure out how I was going to get my block for the month done and posted ASAP then realized I HAD sent October's already..won't slack, will be it done and sent to you by next week...

Janice and all of you..are you like me, look at the posting of the blocks and they all look so much alike that you don't seem to know which you've sent? Maybe I'm just losing it...lol

I try and keep the list at the top of the month's thread up to date with who has sent. If I have it, there is an * beside your name for that month. As you can see, some have gone ahead and I have tried to keep those updated, too.

If you are ever in doubt look up at the top or D-Mail me and I can tell you. Don't want no panic attacks here or have you think you mailed when you didn't. We are all so busy that sometimes it is hard to keep track of what we have done and what is still waiting.

If there is any other way I can make it easier for you to keep track of blocks, let me know.

The last three blocks arrived early this week and now this thread is ready to be put to bed.

Ladies, you out did yourselves on this one. Not only was it a difficult block but it is a busy time of the year. I had no idea there were so many beautiful blue and green batiks out there and seeing them makes me want some fabric from each one for my stash! This is going to make one bea..u..ti..ful quilt and I can wait to do it...next year! LOL I will try and take a picture of all of the blocks when I have time and post it on one of the other monthly threads.

Thank you again for making the blocks for my month as special as each of you are to me.

I was up at 5:30 for 40 years and then when my husband retired it got pushed back to about 7 - 8. Then back to sleeping when I could during his last year due to meds and taking care of him. Then I went to other way sleeping my life away after his death so I think I am slowly reestablishing my hours. I have been getting up earlier these past few weeks and I actually like it--every thing is so quiet, still and peaceful. No sounds from the highway--just the normal noises around the lake.

Enjoy your vacation.
